Lady Trojans rolling over the competition early
OXFORD – The lady Trojans stole the show once again, this time from the hosting Oxford Blackhawks, winning 19-12.
Even though the lady Trojans seemed to be hitting well at the plate, securing the win on 19 earned runs, Greene Coach Rick Condon held himself and his team to a higher standard when it came to the fielding issues Greene endured.
“We let the game slip away from us at one point, we had to refocus,” said Condon. “We came out and were up strong 11-2 at one time, then we gave up four runs. I don’t know if they got overconfident of just lost focus, but they are much better players than surrendering those runs.”
As Condon attested, Oxford did manage a small rally in the top of the fourth inning to draw the game to 11-6.
“I think we overcompensated, it was the girls first look at that pitcher, she throws hard. The girls made the adjustments when they needed to, but they had fallen so far mentally out of the game, but we corrected that and it worked out in the end,” said Condon.
It was on the backs of nine separate girls on Greene who scored on the evening that Greene reached 19-runs. Standouts for Greene were McKenna Sergi who went 2-4 with 3-runs; Sydney Bennett who went 3-5 with 3-runs; and Maddie Brink who went 2-3 with 2-runs.
“We have had a chance to go over these things (Difficulties) in the gym, but not being able to actually get outside makes a huge difference. Instead we can actually get out of the field, we've been inside and I'm lightly tapping it to them and basically doing walk throughs,” said Condon.
Oxford's number 7, went 2-2 on the evening with 4-runs earned , while number 15 went 3-4 with 3 additional runs. While the Blackhawks saw pitcher number 21, Allison Beckwith pitch the game.
Next up for Oxford is away at Harpursville at 4:30 p.m.; while Greene will be away at Walton later this evening at 4:30 p.m.
