Boys dominate the Black Knights while the girls sweep the field events

NORWICH – The Norwich varsity track team claimed two wins at home this past Tuesday, April 12 when they cleaned house on both the boys and girls side of the meet. The boys would end up winning 97-40 followed by the girls winning 83-56.
The Norwich boys controlled the meet from start to finish, winning a total of 13 of the 15 events on the day.
Despite the cold weather, the boys posted some impressive times on the track seeing the team of Zach Race, David Berger, Eric Conant and Drew Walsh in the 4x100 meters run a 46.9.
“I don’t think they realize they’re young, everyone who has beat them this year has been a senior,” said Norwich head coach Shaun Horan.
Norwich also claimed a victory in the 4x400 relay; consisting of Connor Supensky, Noah Bufalini, Scott Tomanocy, and Gabe Gawronski, who ran a 4:01.6. Horan stated this time was sub par but encouraged that due to the chilly weather, good things are to come from this group as well.
Despite not claiming the first place spot in the 100 meter sprint, which went to Hazemty of Windsor with a time of 11.5, Norwich finished second, third and fourth in that closely contested event with a time of 11.6 ran by Zach Race, 12.0 ran by Eric Conant, and 12.3 ran by David Berger.
Gabe Gawronski ran a very impressive time of 56.2 in the 400 meter dash, as he paced the athlete from Windsor to claim the win in the last 100 meters of the race.
“The Windsor kid went out in the first 300 meters like he was in the Olympics, he didn’t slow down until the straight away. He must have been a good 30 meters ahead of Gabe, and Gabe is very mature for a freshman, with keeping his pace and hanging on to track him down. He did a real nice job,” said Horan.
Zach Race impressed on the day with his showing in the 200 meters when he claimed the first place spot after posting a time of 23.9.
“23.9 for a 200 is fast, a lot of times we see that time at the end of the season. It's ridiculous, the 200 is definitely his race, so hopefully more things to come from him,” said Horan.
The boys also saw wins come their way in the 1600 meter run with Ben Ericksen with a time of 5:04; the 400 meter hurdles with Connor Nial running a 106.2; and Noah Bufalini running 2:13.5 in the 800 meters.
However, it wasn’t just the track events where the boys saw success, Norwich claimed wins in the Long Jump with Conant jumping a 17'11”3/4; senior Jordan Vinal in the Triple Jump launching himself to a 38'8” jump, and mainstay senior, Thomas Reilly cleaning up his competition with throws in the Discus and Shot Put with throws of 142'5” and 46'5”, respectively.
Due to the success of many on the boys side of the meet Horan was at an almost loss for words as to any particular stand out saying, “It is really hard to pick out a top performer on the boys side. They really support each other, its great to see that.”
The Tornado girls sealed the win as well but in a totally different fashion.
“Girls side, the story is in the field really. We hung with them on the track but really cleaned it up on the field. Winning 2 out of 3 relays shows our strength, but really to win, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot and disk, to win all five field events, and then get seconds in all of them as well,” said Horan.
The Norwich girls only claimed a first place finish in one track event other than the relays. This lone first place finish went to Destiny Gladney in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 20.8.
Much like Horan attested, Norwich claimed two more wins in the relays when the team of Marysa Campbell, Michaela Fazio, Hailey Colabelli, and Delilah Geislinger ran the 4x100 with a time of 55.6; as well as when Liz Eddy, Nicole Jeffrey, Hailey Colabelli, Delilah Geislinger ran the 4x400 meter relay in a winning time of 4:54.4.
Although some wins as well as many place finishes on the track it was the field events for the girls that helped them edge the lady Black Knights. Norwich swept the field events winning all five of them, as well as claiming seconds and thirds in many as well.
The jumpers at the meet saw Long Jump go to Emily Shattuck of with a jump of 15' 1”, Triple Jump go to Vanessa Salerno with a jump of 30' 3”, High Jump go to Savannah Williams at 4'8” and Pole Vault go to Liz Eddy with a winning height of 6'6”.
Kaitlyn Shaver, much like Reilly on the boys side, swept her competition as well in both the Discus and Shot Put, claiming wins in both with throws of 103' 7” in the Discus and 30' 1” in the Shot Put.
“Windsor almost made no impact in the field events. A lot of girls stepped up today, we had some new faces and they really did great. We have a small team but the girls really hammered down, and they react well,” said Horan.
Next up for both the boys and girls Norwich Track and Field team is the Windsor Invitational meet this coming Saturday April, 16. Norwich will be at home next Tuesday April, 19 when the host the Chenango Valley Warriors.
