Oxford Softball wins 11-5 earns third win
DELHI – Delhi hosted the Oxford varsity softball team on the windy Tuesday afternoon, in a game which ultimately ended up in favor of the Blackhawks when they got back on the bus with their third win of the season after defeating Delhi 11-5.
Despite the loss, it was Delhi who jumped out to the early lead over Oxford when they scored two of their five runs in the first inning.
The lady Blackhawks got their feet underneath them in the second inning when Rachael Seiler started the batting off with a triple to center field. Emilee Eldred was then walked and stole to get to second, before the Blackhawks endured two strikeouts at the plate.
Kylie Roys had the RBI double to bring Seiler and home knotting the game at 2-2. Delhi would tack another run on in the bottom of the second to take the lead at 3-2 for the final time in the game.
“The base running was good, the feeling was for real tonight,” said Oxford head coach Heather Pizza.
The third inning had Oxford knocking in the runs as they both connected as well as took advantage of some mistakes on the Delhi side.
While Oxford played solid defense in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, blanking Delhi in those innings they actually managed an additional two runs in the fourth with three more in the sixth.
Heading into the final inning of play and up 8-3 Oxford elected to keep their foot on the pedal, knowing no lead is safe when it comes to a close softball game.
“We got some insurance runs which is nice because in softball anything can happen. You want to get enough of a lead so the teams cant catch back up with you. We were able to start timing their pitcher so that was nice as well,” said Pizza as Oxford knocking in three additional runs.
Allison Beckwith was on the mound throughout the seven inning game pitching to Layla Kriz in the first three innings and Jessie Howe the next four. Beckwith secured a solid game, as she strung together a game featuring eight strikeouts.
“They (Delhi) were starting to time Allison, but we had a little bit of a cushion at that time,” said Pizza. “I was very pleased with the girls played this evening, it was not an easy game. Rachel Seiler had a great night fielding and all our outfielders were on fire tonight to back Allison up.”
Oxford Softball will now travel to Unadilla Valley later on today at 4:30 p.m.
“We capitalized on their efforts tonight and got us another win closer to our goal,” said Pizza.
