Chenango County showdown on the track
UNADILLA VALLEY – The Unadilla Valley boys and girls varsity Track and Field team held a meet this Wednesday April 20, which featured the visiting teams of Greene, Bainbridge-Guilford, Deposit-Hancock, and Harpursville-Afton.
On the boys side it was Deposit-Hancock (DH) who walked away with the win as they scored a team score of 119, followed in second by Unadilla Valley, third was claimed by Bainbridge-Guilford (BG) at 45, when they edged Harpursville-Afton (AH) who scored 44, while Greene claimed the last spot in the team score.
The home team Unadilla Valley who scored 117 claimed the girls top team spot. It was the Harpursville-Afton with 56 points who claimed the second place team finish, followed by Deposit-Hancock at 49, Greene at 45, and BG at 26.
Deposit-Hancock
The boys saw nine of the possible 15 events go their way with first place finishes; while the girls won two of their events.
The boys swept the relays on the day when they won the 4x100 with a time of 46.39, the 4x400 with a sub four-minute time of 3:56.36, and the 4x800 with a winning time of 9:09.50.
Ryan Hornbeck ran a flat 5-minute 1600 meter run to claim the top spot, Hornbeck also ran 2:14.7 in the 800 meter run for another win on the evening.
While the majority of the sprinting events would also go to DH when David Schaeffer ran a :51 second 400 meter dash, Dylan Christ ran a 1:03.38 400 meter high hurdles, while Joe Scuderi flew down the track to a time of 23.64 seconds in the 200 meter dash.
The Shot Put event was the sole field event that fell to DH when Tyler Shirkey threw a 38’9”.5.
The girls claimed wins in 3200 meter run and the Discus events. Kelsey Young ran a nice time of 12:34.7 in the 3200 meter run while Tyler Bethann launched her Discus to a length of 68’4” for the win.
Unadilla Valley
The boys on the UV side of the saw three first place finishes go their way in the 100-meter dash, 3200 meter run and the High Jump.
It was UV’s Chris Stirone who ran a 11.28 in the 100 meter dash who claimed the first place in the event; Tyler Simmons won the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:31.6; while Marcus Granger took home the win at the High Jump when he cleared the height of 5’10”.
The UV girls claimed 10 wins in the meet en route to their impressive team win.
The UV girls swept the relays with wins in the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays with times of 54.39, 4:40.15, and 11:15.57 respectively.
Julia Oglesby earned two wins in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.7, as well as 5’ winning jump in the High Jump.
It was UV’s Abby Avolio who claimed the spotlight with her three individual wins in the 100-meter dash, the Long Jump, and Shot Put events.
Avolio ran a 13.56 in the 100, before making her way to two wins in the field events when she jumped a 14’10”.7 in the Long Jump and threw the Shot Put a distance of 29’ flat for the third win.
Maggie Merlo and Keana Schrag each claimed wins of their own with a 28.06 run in the 200-meter dash, and a jump of 27’6” in the Triple Jump respectively.
Greene
The Trojans on the boys side would have two individual winners, one seeing success on the track while the other in the Discus.
Greg Wignter raced to a 19.69 time in the boys 110 hurdles for the win, followed by his teammate Jacob Arbeit in the Discus when he launched a nice 100’2” throw.
The lady Trojans saw their lone first place finisher, Katie Anderson run a solid 5:26.3 in the girls 1500 meter run.
Harpursville-Afton
The mens side for AH saw their Long Jumper Dan Villano stick a solid 17’11”.6 jump to secure the win for the boys.
The girls side for AH faired slightly better as they saw three individuals walk away with first place finishes in the 100 meter hurdles, 400 meter hurdles and 800 meter dash.
It was Brynn Crocker in the 100-meter hurdles that impressed with a time of 18.76; while fellow hurdler Daphne Knapp took the 400-meter hurdles when she ran a 1:16.26 for the win.
Shyahna Gaydorous bolted to a 2:48.5 time in the 800-meter dash for the final win for AH on the girls side.
Bainbridge-Guilford
The boys and girls failed to secure any first place finishes in the meet, however, securing four second place finishes on the boys side and two on the girls side.
