NORWICH – In a non-league game against Sidney last Saturday, Apr. 23, the Purple Tornado varsity baseball team suffered yet another loss, on a score line of 13-3.
The game was tightly contested until the middle innings, when Norwich began to lose its grasp on proceedings. Matters came to a climax in the fifth inning, where errors cost the Tornado dearly. “We almost got out of the fifth inning with no runs scored, but we made a two out error. They (Sidney) capitalized on it big time. It extended the inning and then we just couldn’t get out of it,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull.
This seems to be a constant problem for Norwich in recent weeks, who will start well, but consistent errors have proven to be their downfall. “The last couple of weeks we’ve been making silly errors that have been killing us. We’ve been hitting the ball better than we have in the past, but these errors are definitely not helping,” said Turnbull.
Best in the loss for the Tornado was Nick Murphy, who went two for three at the plate, driving in all three Norwich runs. Alex Hoskins finished three for five on the day, with a triple and two RBI’s for the Warriors.
Following this latest loss, the Tornado men stand at 1-6-1 on the season. They have a tough week ahead, beginning with a test against Seton Catholic on Monday, Apr. 25, with John Predmore getting the nod to start on the mound. “We have to start winning games, or it’s going to get tough real quick,” said Turnbull.
