Norwich corrects errors, to stay competitive against the Saints
NORWICH – The Norwich varsity baseball team played host to the Seton Catholic Saints out of Binghamton on Monday April 25, only to suffer another loss at 5-1.
“Tonight was a good game that we played. The thing with us so far is, it's either or with us; it's either we field well and don’t hit or we hit well and don’t field. And tonight we fielded real well but just couldn’t hit. We made some great plays in the field today,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull.
With only one committed error throughout the game, the error stricken play from Norwich which we saw over this last weekend seems to be corrected.
“We only surrendered two more runs after the fourth inning. I liked how we bounced back (after loss to Sidney 13-3), because I thought we played one of our worst games on Saturday. We didn’t win, but we played well, we just have to learn to be more consistent. We haven’t been very consistent all year, but we played better,” said Turnbull.
The fielding was spot on for the Tornado, as plays were being made all over the infield and outfield with players such as Cristobal Caballero, Jake Walsh, Paden Burlison, and Gabe Gojani were flying to the ball whenever it was put into play.
Pitching for the whole seven innings for Norwich was John Predmore, who threw out four strikeouts to his only two walks of hit by pitch.
“John just throws strikes and then his knuckle ball. To be honest I thought he was gonna want to come out after the fourth inning, but he kept saying he wanted to go back out, he gutted it out so I was happy for him,” said Turnbull. “We just couldn’t score any runs for him. His four strikeouts, only nine hits and only walked two guys with hit by pitches helped keep us in the game, I was happy with him.”
Norwich did secure the early lead in the second inning going up 1-0. However, after the early score, Norwich failed to string any offensive plays together, instead surrendering two runs to Seton in the third. With an additional run coming in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, by way of the Saints.
“It's a good game when it doesn’t take very long, if both sides play well then it is a quick game. We didn’t have any of those long drawn out 20-minute innings. They're a good ball club, they’ll make a good run at the end in sectionals,” said Turnbull.
Next up for Norwich is Susquehanna Valley away later on today, April 26, at 4:30 p.m., weather permitting. Norwich will also play a double-header on Wednesday in Windsor starting at 3:30 p.m.
“Susquehanna Valley has two good pitchers, we were beating them through six innings though, so I think we can hang with them. We were hitting the ball well, they just brought in the lefty pitcher and we struggled with him,” said Turnbull.
