Trojan baseball suffers through tough week, looks to bounce back

GREENE – Last week the Greene varsity baseball team played a slew of games, in which they only managed one win over McGraw high school, before falling to Afton, Deposit, and Sidney.
The Trojans traveled to McGraw last monday, April 25. to take on McGraw, a game in which their bats were on as they jumped on top early and poured on the runs.
After a slow first inning, Josh Harrington managed to reach a base on a dropped ball. Harrington quickly stole second before Joe Phillips hit a line drive single to left field.
After walking the next at bat, and with bases loaded now for the Trojans, it was Jordon Harrington who hit a hard ground ball to third base, allowing Josh Harrington to open the flood gates for Greene as he made it home. Phillips then managed the second run of the inning on the last play of the inning.
This 2-0 lead for Greene quickly changed to 16-2 due to some solid at bats and some sloppy play on defense for McGraw. McGraw committed nine errors to Greene's two in the contest.
After the two run second inning, Greene found their groove, scoring in every inning from their on out, with a six run seventh inning to top it off.
Pitching the win for Greene was Breven Gilmore, who pitched six innings and tossed out five strikeouts to only one walk.
Ben Kinney would finish the night batting 2-4 with four RBI's and two runs; while Joe Philips would go 2-3 with three runs.

On Wednesday April 27, Greene hosted Afton, in a game that was close throughout despite a mid game lapse, where Afton would claim the commanding lead, winning 8-1.
Afton would earn the 1-0 lead in the top of the second when some costly errors sent one Vincent Caiati home for the lead.
Unlike the previous game, Greene committed the majority in this contest, having six to Afton's two errors.
Afton claimed the commanding lead in the top of the fourth inning, when Greene gave up fixe runs, followed by a two run inning in the fifth. Greene would only be able to muster one run in the duration of the seven innings.
Already down 8-0 and in the bottom of the fifth, it was Ben Kinney who managed to capitalize on his single. Kinney would edge his way around the diamond due to some costly mistakes and dropped balls from Afton.
Pitching in the loss for Greene was Jordon Harrington for four innings with five strikeouts.
The only two players to record hits for the Trojans were Ben Kinney going 2-3 with a run and Dalton Brower going 1-2.
Afton saw their pitcher Colin Nabinger nine strikeouts to go along with only three hits allowed for the whole seven innings pitched.
Afton's McGwire Tuttle had a big night for Afton when he batted 3-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Greene then turned right around the next day, Thursday April 28. to host a visiting Deposit team. Deposit would ultimately win the tightly contested game at 6-4, after jumping out early with the lead and holding on for the win.
Deposit saw a three run opening inning go their way, followed by a one run inning in the second, as they sat comfortably ahead of Greene 4-0 heading into the fourth inning where they managed to tack on an additional two runs making the score 6-0.
Once again for Greene, errors helped write the outcome when they committed another six costly mistakes compared to Deposits one.
Greene would managed a comeback attempt late though, as Greene pitcher Zach Orzell managed to hold off Deposit as they game went on. Orzell tossed out three strikeouts in the competition as his defense behind him helped the Trojans stay in the game.
The three run fifth inning, and a one run seventh was the most the Trojans could muster. Zach Orzell would bat on the night 2-4 with a run, while teammate Jordan Harrington would also go 2-4 with a run.

The final game of the week on Friday, April 29., would follow suit in the win column, as Greene committed more errors than visiting Sidney, losing 8-3.
The game remained tied through three innings, before Sidney exploded with a six run fourth inning, followed with a two run fifth. These two innings were the only two Sidney would record runs in, but this proved enough to take the Trojans.
Greene struggled with their at bats in this contest in part to the superb pitching from Sidney's Zack Green who pitched 14-strikeouts, only allowing four hits in all seven innings.
Greene would eventually connect with the Sidney standout pitcher in the seventh inning to record three runs, but this proved too little too late.
The four errors committed on the day for Greene, helped allow Sidney to gain too sizable of a lead to overcome late.
Luke Day, Lucian Austin, Joe Phillips and Scott all recorded a hit each for Greene; while Sidney saw Nathan Vibbard record a solid day at bat when he went 3-3 with a run.
