Relay For Life’s ‘Around the World Dinner’ to be held Saturday

NORWICH – Emmanuel Episcopal Church’s Outreach Committee will be cooking Around the World for their upcoming fundraiser. They’re spanning the
globe with a chicken and biscuits benefit dinner and Chinese Auction on Saturday, May 7, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Their dinner plans for the 20th annual American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life (RFL) of Chenango County will go “Around the World” as “Relay ‘Hopes’ for a Cure.” This year’s fun theme will make you want to get out your passport and travel to the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, at 37 West Main Street in Norwich.
The RFL of Chenango County has chosen the creative theme of Around the World and they will carry it through in all the fund raising events, teams and decorations. Relay teams could come up with names such as the Columbus Navigators, Equator Invaders, Continental Drifters, and the Northwest Passengers.
Take a bold step into adventure because the Relay’s international dinner menu will include a chicken and biscuits entrée that has roots in merry old England, fantastique real garlic mashed potatoes of French origin, along with the ideal side dish, peas with pearl onions (English again). Add to that “koolsla” better known as coleslaw which is originally Dutch (donated by The Ontario Hotel), Native American cranberry sauce, and thirst quenching beverages. Don’t forget your dessert, it’s a yummy brownie Sundae with vanilla ice-cream (donated by Gilligan’s), and brownies were born in the USA.
Globe trotters, you don’t need a currency converter as prices for this great fundraiser are just: $7 for adults; $5 for children (aged 6-12); and FREE for children aged 5 and under! All you can eat, in-house only. Take-outs are available (and deliveries within Norwich City limits).Call ahead: 334-8801. This May 7 dinner is sponsored by the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Outreach Committee. Donations will be gladly accepted.
According to RFL of Chenango County event chair, Kristina Shaw, “The Chinese Auction will take place during the Relay dinner, and there will be around 20 fantastic baskets to vie for! The Committee will be serving the dinner, running the auction, and selling Relay luminaries.
Charlie McMullen said, “Come in for a great dinner and support a good cause. All the money goes to Relay For Life of Chenango County. It’s a win-win situation.”
The Emmanuel Episcopal Outreach Committee is chaired by Jim Everard. They have a variety of programs to assist people in need such as gas vouchers for medical appointments, assistance with water/electric/heating bills (not rent), providing handicap equipment, and with prescription/medical necessities. They also support the Our Daily Bread food pantry, provide space for Scouts/organization’s meetings, provide a Thanksgiving meal, and 100 Thanksgiving food baskets.
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. The dinner is one portion of the fundraising. The (actual) Relay For Life begins on July 15, 5 p.m., with a Survivor Dinner. The opening ceremony will be at 6:30 p.m. and will go through the night until July 16, 8 a.m. at the Chenango County Fairgrounds.
