Development Chenango celebrates ‘Economic Development Week’

CHENANGO COUNTY – The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) was formed in 2001 when the American Economic Development Council and Council for Urban Economic Development merged, creating a single entity with a past going back 90 years (as of this year).
The IEDC provides professional development services, advisory services, analysis of economic development related policy, and advocating on behalf of economic development efforts. They are the foremost organization of this kind.
When the IEDC announced that 2016 was the “Year of the Economic Developer,” to coincide with its 90th anniversary, professionals in the field paid attention. The prestige of the organization and rarity of such proclamations lent weight to the designation.
The week of May 8 through May 14, furthermore, has been named “Economic Development Week.”
According to IEDC, the aim for Economic Development Week is to “celebrate achievements within the economic development profession.”
As such, Development Chenango will be using this week as an opportunity to promote available services to the county, gather feedback from Chenango County residents, and hear what else people think can be done to help.
Development Chenango says 2016 is as good a time as any to start a new business; and for those who have an idea in mind, there are plenty of resources to get started in Chenango County. Development Chenango has low interest loans to assist small businesses and farmers looking to expand. It can guide people through the application process for a state grant (New York’s 2016 Consolidated Funding Application Available Resources were released recently).
Commerce Chenango is also a source of information for prospective entrepreneurs, tourists, and current business owners. The organization hosts networking events, connects businesses, and puts together training programs for in-demand job skills.
This year is proving to be a busy year for Commerce Chenango as it continues to pursue projects and continue programs that aim to better the county’s economy.
In addition to loan programs, Commerce Chenango and Development Chenango are working on several exciting projects which they believe will have a demonstrably positive impact on the area. One of those projects is the expansion of the L.A. Najarian Ribbon Mill in Greene, with assistance from the County of Chenango Industrial Development Agency (CCIDA) as well as funding from the 2015 Consolidated Funding Application awards helped make possible. The project will result in expanded capacity with new equipment, and will create new jobs in the area.
The L.A. Najarian Ribbon Mill project is a great example of economic development efforts accomplishing one of the most important goals of Development Chenango – creating well-paying and reliable jobs.
Funding was also received for the Raymond Center for Manufacturing Excellence and the Norwich Howard Johnson Hotel re-model and re-branding. The Raymond Corporation will be able to improve their position in a competitive industry with greater employee development resources and better equipment. The hotel re-development will help the Chenango County meet the lodging needs of local businesses and accommodate visitors to events like Gus Macker and Colorscape. A 2014 County Lodging Study and the current strategic plan label this as one of our greatest current priorities.
These are but a few examples of what Commerce Chenango is working on to improve quality of life and present better opportunities in the area.
While Commerce Chenango and Development Chenango are excited about these current projects and their future development, they also continue looking forward to the next opportunity. The 2016 Consolidated Funding Application presents a new prospect for local businesses to inject funding into their next initiative, turning ideas into reality. Application’s for funding must be submitted by July 29, so business are encouraged to act soon to start an application. Commerce Chenango staff are here to help. If anyone needs assistance upon drafting an application, they should contact the Commerce Chenango office.
Economic Development Week is being used as an opportunity to get feedback from the community to keep Chenango County on the right track. Commerce Chenango and Development Chenango will be reaching out through Twitter and Facebook, so people are encouraged to start a dialogue there. The organization wants to know which projects folks are most excited about and any other ideas that might have an impact on economic development.
Follow Commerce Chenango on Twitter (@CmrceChenango) where they’ll be asking for feedback with the hashtag #YearofEconDev.
