Tornado softball denied win in late innings

OWEGO – The evenly matched game between the Norwich and Owego varsity softball squads, this past Thursday May 5, would ultimately end in heartbreak for the Tornado, losing 1-0.
Owego would earn the lone run of the game bottom of the sixth inning in stunning fashion.
“It was good game but we came out on the wrong end,” said Norwich head coach Scott Moore.
With runners on second and third for Owego, it was Maddy Lapinski of Owego who stepped up to bat and ultimately knocked in the winning run, sending her teammate Kate Quigley home.
It was third Norwich's third baseman Shannon Moore who scooped the ball and decisively threw to her first baseman Kassidy Seary for the forced out. Seary attempted to get the out and make the play at the home plate when she threw it home to her catcher Jordan Sanford.
“Jordan put the tag on the girl and it was close but the umpire called her safe,” said coach Moore. “A tenth of a second here or there, and that is what made the difference on it.”
Down 1-0 entering the final inning of play, the Norwich girls made contact with the ball from Owego's pitcher, Allie Heeman, but failed to produce any runs to close the loss out at 1-0.
“She (Heeman) was good, but we were hitting the ball. It's the way it has been going lately, we hit the ball hard and all they do is put the glove up and catch it, we haven’t been able to find the holes,” said coach Moore.
The stalemated game only saw Owego produce one error and Norwich produce none in a tight matchup. With only five total hits from both teams, and with two going Norwich's way the low scoring contest was relied heavily by the pitching and defense on the day to keep it close. Kate Dowdall finished the evening 1-3, as well as Shannon Moore going 1-3 as well.
Hannah Eddy pitched for the entire seven inning game for the Tornado, throwing 77 total pitches. Eddy managed to strikeout seven batters, while only giving up the three hits on the night and surrendering no walks to Owego.
“She (Eddy) held her composure pretty well tonight,” said coach Moore. “She did a real nice job as usual for us, we just came up short.”
Norwich (9-6) will look to correct their offensive struggles of late as they move into their Monday, May 9, showdown again Chenango Valley at 4:30 p.m. in Chenango Valley, a team they lost to earlier in the season 21-5.
