Norwich falls short in showdown with Oneonta
NORWICH – Norwich hosted division rival Oneonta this past Saturday, May 7., in what proved to be one of the biggest match-ups of the season for the Tornado.
Oneonta would earn the tight victory of Norwich at 4-3, in part due to a forfeit from Norwich at second singles.
Now returning to normal scoring match, it was Norwich's Zayn Harper and Austin Benenati who put up a valiant fight but were ultimately edged by Oneonta's Alexa Szenczi and Nicole van der Sommen at 7-5 after splitting the first two sets at 6-4, 5-7, to surrender the match point to Oneonta earning them the win.
Jamison Luke fell victim in first singles slot to Chris Catan, losing 6-1 and 6-2; followed by a loss at third singles when Cameron Edwards battled with Oneonta's Sergi Blabia, only to lose 6-2 and 6-4.
Impressively, Joel Fazio continued the winning streak at fourth singles when he earned Norwich a match point, defeating Benji Blacklock. Fazio made a comeback after an early set loss to Blacklock at 6-7(5-7), to earn the win at 6-0 and 6-4.
Norwich successfully closed out their doubles play, despite Oneonta already earning the team win at 4-1 at the time.
Josia Shaver and Matt Giglio defeated Thomas Fischer and Molly Medina in straight sets at 6-0 and 6-1.
While third doubles saw Mike Carson and Dan Zieno earn the win in straight sets as well, beating Abigail Thorsland and Reece Thorsland at 6-0 and 6-2.
With this critical loss to Oneonta, Norwich now sits at an overall record of 8-3, while Oneonta improves to 10-1 on the season.
