Norwich falters midway to drop to Owego
OWEGO – Norwich varsity baseball traveled to Owego Free Academy this past Thursday, May 5, in a matchup they were hoping to improve on from the earlier season loss of 5-2.
“We got through the first couple innings, I don’t even think they got a guy past first base,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull. “Then the fourth inning came and we gave up too many hits.”
Norwich would hold the game scoreless through the first three innings, before Owego managed to time their pitching somewhat and earned a monster five run inning in the fourth.
“We only had five hits in the game, their pitcher pitched well in the middle part of the game,” said Turnbull. “He established his fast ball pretty early then the second time around facing him, he had a good curveball, and we just couldn’t hit it.”
Norwich had some bright spots on the evening, with Chris Jeffrey going 1-2 with a run, John Predmore going 1-3 with a run scored, Jake Walsh going 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI, Paden Burlison going 1-3 with an RBI, and Austin McCloskey going 1-3 with an RBI.
Jeffrey and Walsh each hit solid doubles for the Tornado.
On the mound for Norwich was Gabe Gojani for the first five innings before Dylan Mack came in for relief. Each Gojani and Mack threw out one strikeout a piece.
It was Owego's Nick Neira who managed to command the game at the mound when he pitched the first six innings throwing nine strikeouts.
“He (Neira) got tired late and they brought in their other pitcher and we got on a couple hits off him,” said Turnbull. “Like I said, Neira had a good curveball and we just struggled with it. I told the guys to go out and just get your hits, we just have to get more consistent with that.”
This 9-3 loss to Owego dropped Norwich to an overall record of 1-11-1 at the time.
