Lady Trojans split in MAC mini Tournament
GREENE – Greene varsity softball would earn two home games in the MAC mini tournament, with a win against Hapursville at 12-4 coming on May 9, followed by a loss to Unatego at 13-3 on May 10.
Harpursville
“This game is what the outcome should have been in our first meeting,” said Greene head coach Rick Condon of their 5-4 loss previously on the season to Harpursville. “We are on again and the ladies are focused. They want to do well in sectionals and are back to there winning ways. Their drive and will to win are back which only means good stuff.”
The lady Trojans would jump out to a 9-1 lead over Harpursville, heading into the fifth inning.
This success on the scoreboard was in part to the excellent pitching on the pitching mound from Greene's Alex Thompson, as well as her defense which backed her up well. Greene would suffered through five errors, while Harpursville surrendered plays to Greene on their own four errors.
“Alex Thompson got the job done and at the plate she went 2-3 with 2 RBI's, it was contagious,” said Condon.
Thompson threw a total 116 pitches in the seven inning game while only giving up one earned run, and striking out six batters.
Thompson's inspired play helped lift the Trojans ninth win on the season, as Greene was on fire at the plate having eight of their nine players record at least one hit on the night, with seven of those eight earning at least one RBI.
“The RBI's were spreading like Jiff on soft bread,” said Condon.
Greene batters: Alyssa Sands 3-5 with a run and an RBI, McKenna Sergi 1-3 with two runs, Sydney Bennett 2-4 with two runs and an RBI, Maddie Brink 2-4 with one run and two RBI's, Brittany Johns 1-2 with two runs and an RBI, Lydia Howard 2-4 with two runs and two RBI's, Jenna Harrington 1-4 with a run and two RBI's, and Alex Thompson with a run and two RBI's.
Greene had zero turnaround time following the win, as they once again hosted Unatego the very next day, May 10.
“The players that started the season have found the will and want to win, play hard and get on top and stay on top,” said Condon.

Unatego
The Lady Trojans were riding high off their crushing win in the first round of the consolation MAC mini Tournament, beating Harpursville 12-4.
However, Unatego came to town hot off their win over Hancock the day prior as well, ultimately rolling over Greene for the win at 13-3.
Notably, Unatego lost to Greene earlier in the season in a close contest that saw Greene win in late innings at 3-2.
The Lady Trojans would command the lead in the second inning at 2-1, when Alyssa Sands hit a double to left field to send Abbey Sands home for the leading run.
However, following the lead in the second, Greene would only muster one additional run in the fourth, while surrendering 12-runs to Unatego.
“No dice to stay on top, their head's just weren't into the game,” said Condon.
The explosive batting from the Trojans was missing from this contest, as they would earn an underwhelming three hits on the day off of Unatego's pitcher, Ashley Hatzidakiz.
Unatego would secure 19-hits on the evening en route to their win.
Hatzidakiz pitched the entire seven innings for Unatego, only giving up one earned run and striking out six Trojan batters.
Alex Thompson would start the game for Greene on the mound before being relieved after four innings for Kathleen Hanrahan and Lydia Howard.
Unatego got the best of Thompson in those four innings, earning eight hits and only being struck out once.
Greene batters: Alyssa Sands 1-3 with two RBI's, Maddie Brink 1-3, Brittany Johns 1-3, and Lydia Howard, Abbey Sands, and Jenna Harrington each scoring a run. Harrington managed an RBI in the game.
Next up for Greene softball (9-6) is a home game against Marathon on May 12, at 7 p.m. under the lights.
