Double division title in 2016

CHENANGO FORKS – To conclude the final duel meet of the 2016 season for the Norwich varsity Track and Field team, they elected to win both boys and girls divisions, when they traveled to take on Chenango Forks on May 11.
This marks the third year in a row the girls side has claimed the title, while 2016 will be the first year since 2011 since the boys have donned the award. Norwich head coach Shaun Horan admittedly claimed that he could not remember a time when both girls and boys won in the same year.
On the girls side, they claimed the win over The Blue Devils at 79-61.
“There were a lot of good performances, they def upset us in a few spots, they shocked us a little,” said Horan.
The Norwich girls claimed 10 of the first place finishes with a variety of other top-three finishes scattered around to help secure the title win.
At the 100 meter dash it was standout Emily Shattuck who claimed the top spot for the Tornado running a 13.2, while Michaela Fazio of Norwich earned some points with her third place finish at the event with a 13.9.
Shattuck would suffer a loss in the 200 meter dash, running a 27.5 to take first followed by her two teammates, Michaela Fazio and Delilah Geislinger in third and fourth.
Norwich claimed the win in the 4x100 relay with a time off 54.9. The team consisted of Hannah Klockowski, Emily Shattuck, Delilliah Geislinger, and Hailey Colabelli.
Shattuck would appear in her fourth event, for once again another win jumping a 15' 2 ½” in the long jump followed by Nicole Jeffrey 14' 5 ½” for second.
Hannah Klockowski would impress in the 100 hurdles winning the event for the Tornado with a time of 17.9. The 400 hurdles saw Destiny Gladney managed a solid third place finish for Norwich as well.
Nicole Jeffrey would help hold the win together for Norwich with her outstanding performances week after week in the distance events. Jeffrey would ultimately win the 3000 meter run with a time of 12:11.4, win the 800 meter run with a personal best time of 2:32.5, and manage a second place finish in the 1500 with a solid time of 5:23.
Liz Eddy of Norwich would manage a second place finish in the pole vault for Norwich when she cleared 6'6”, this would occur right after Eddy saw herself take a fourth place finish in the 3000 meter run.
“Liz is one of those girls we can put anywhere, she is a real tough kid. She really is pretty good all around, there are not many girls who can go run a 3000 then go pole vault,” said Horan.
Norwich would sweep the triple jump going first through third with Vanessa Salerno taking first with 30' 11”, Savannah Williams in second with 30' 3 ½”, and Hannah Klockowski at third with 27' 11”.
Williams would see a second place finish fall her way in the high jump when she cleared 4' 10”, followed by a third place finish go to Destiny Gladney when she cleared 4'.
Back on the track, it was Hailey Colabelli who took a second place finish in the 400 meter dash with a 1:03.5, with Norwich's Geislinger in third with a 1:08.4.
The normal outcome occurred at the shot put and discus when Katelyn Shaver won the shot put with a throw of 34' 4 ¼”, and Kara Evans took a first in the discus with a throw of 97' 11” followed by Shaver in second with a 95' 11”.
It was however, the last event on the track that impressed the most, the 4x400 meter relay saw lead changes all the way around the track. Horan attested that with each hand off came a lead change.
“Awesome race, it was insane both girls and boys. We went back and forth every single leg for the girls, we edged them out beating them by just a second or two. Each girl changed leads at least once,” said Horan.
The team of Destiny Gladney, Delilah Gesilinger, Liz Eddy, and Hailey Colabelli would earn the close win with a seasons best time of 4:32.1 to cap of the division title win.
On the boys side things got slightly more interesting, as it seemed at any moment the lead could have been surrendered to Chenango Forks.
Norwich impressively earned the double division win at 74-69 over Chenango Forks.
“It came down to the 4x400 really it was that close, Gabe crossed the line and the other kid fell,” said Horan of how close the meet was coming down to the very last event on the day.
“The 4x400 was very similar fashion to the girls, it was neck and neck. We had various lead changes and it really came down to it, they were beating us by a foot for the last 100. Gabe (Gawronski) was coming down the line and he was closing the gap, the Chenango Forks guy just started leaning in the exchange zone and he just went down, he fell short of the line by like two feet,” explained Horan of how the division title was holding on by a thread.
The 4x400 team that would win consisted of: Scott Tomanocy, Noah Bufalini, Connor Supensky, and Gabe Gawronski and ran a seasons best time of 3:40.5.
Norwich would suffer their first loss at the 4x800 relay this season when they ran a 8:47 for the second place spot.
While Chenango Forks also downed the young and very promising 4x100 relay team of Zach Race, David Berger, Eric Conant and Connor Nial who ran a 46.0 to Chenango Fork's time of 45.9. Horan alleged that one bad hand off contributed to the downfall and eventual loss at the this event.
Nial, who almost missed the meet for personal reasons, would come on the scene in the hurdling events with a determination to win, as he claimed both the 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles top spot with times of 18.3 and 1:02.8, both seasons best times.
The 100 meter dash saw Zach Race take the gold with an 11.4 followed closely by Eric Conant. However, Conant was edged for third running an 11.9,
“He tried to out lean the kid at the line, the official ended up giving it to the Forks kid, it was close enough that the FAT would have been nice,” said Horan.
The 200 meter dash also went to Norwich's Zach Race with a blazing time of 23.2, followed by David Berger who nabbed a third place finish with his seasons best time of 24.5.
The eventual hero of the meet, Gabe Gawronski, also saw another 400 meter race go his way, when he claimed the first place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.6.
The distance events had Ben Ericksen win the 1600 and 3200 meter races, with times of 4:40.6 and 10:59.1 respectively. Noah Marvin who tack on a third place finish behind Ericksen in the 1600 with a time of 5:23.
Chenango Forks would dominate the jumping pits winning long jump, triple jump, high jump, and pole vault.
Despite not earning the top spot in any, Norwich would see Jordan Vinal finish in third in the long jump with a 17'7” while stepping up to finish in second in the triple jump with a 38'7”.
David Berger would succumb to his opponent in the pole vault, however, would still perform exceptionally well, clearing 9'6” for a second place finish.
Thrower turned hybrid jumper David Bernstein once again assisted Norwich with some much needed points in the high jump when he locked up a solid second place in the high jump.
Thomas Reilly would claim the first place spot for Norwich in both the shot put and discus launching his throws of 47'4” and 142'10” for the wins respectively.
Norwich would finish top three in the discus, when Bernstein locked another second with a throw of 131' and a throw from Trevor McCarthy of 117' for third.
Bernstein tacked on a third place finish in the shot put, only managing a 42' throw.
Winning both girls and boys titles in the same year for the first time in recent memory, the Tornado Track and Field team will now conclude their undefeated 2016 duel meet season and prepare for invitationals and eventually the post-season.
Next up for Norwich is an invitational in Oneonta, on May 13. followed by the throwers heading to the Parkhurst invitational in Union Endicott on Saturday.
