Crimson Knights devour Richfield Springs
AFTON – The Afton varsity baseball team hosted Richfield Springs in the first round of the Section IV Class D Tournament on May 17, winning 12-1.
Afton earned a second seed in the tournament with their 12-3 overall regular season record, only trailing first seed Hancock with a 15-2 record.
This set up the matchup earlier this week between Richfield Springs (6-6).
The Crimson Knights of Afton would have a somewhat slow start at the plate, only securing two runs in the first inning followed by three additional runs in the third.
However, Afton could afford some adjustment at the plate due to the stellar pitching from Joe DeVona.
DeVona pitched for the first six innings of the contest, only allowing two hits and one walk out of his 84-pitches to Richfield Springs. More impressively, DeVona would strikeout 15-Richfield Springs batters in his six innings on the mound.
This allowed Afton to eventually find their groove at the plate, as they blew the flood gates open on RS, with a seven run inning in favor of Afton in the fifth inning.
Richfield Springs would show fight, as they avoided the shut out when they managed to get on the board with their lone run in the sixth inning.
Afton batters: Joe DeVona 1-2 with two runs, Colin Nabinger 1-3 with a run and an RBI, Tyler King 0-2 with two runs, Conor Graven-Briggs 1-3 with a run, Vincent Caiati 2-3 with two runs and two RBI's, Mitchell Mertz 0-2 with a run and an RBI, McGwire Tuttle 1-3, Kyle Grover one run, Brody Croft 1-3 with a run and two RBI's, KJ Ives 1-4 with a run and an RBI.
With the impressive win, Afton (13-3) will move on to the next round of the tournament. Afton will host Downsville on May 19, at 4:30 p.m.
