Calling all cars: NECCM opens new police and muscle car exhibit

NORWICH – Hoping to draw attention to the evolution of police vehicles and muscle cars, the Northeast Classic Car Museum in Norwich will launch a new exhibit this weekend spotlighting some of the most distinguishable muscle and police cars of the latter half of the century.
After an exclusive invite-only opening slated for Friday, “Road Rivals: Police Cars vs Muscle Cars and Motorcycles” will be unveiled to the general public on Saturday, giving all car lovers a glimpse of the vehicles that inspired the cop car chases of the movies.
“The new ‘Road Rivals’ exhibit features police cars from all over the United States, along with iconic muscle cars and motorcycles,” said NECCM Executive Director Robert Jeffrey. “In addition to the new exhibit, we also have many new cars throughout the museum in pre-war and post-war exhibits. Plenty of new cars to see, even if you were here last year.”
Sponsored by NYCM Insurance, “Road Rivals” is the 19th exhibit that the museum has opened over the course of its 19-year history. A new special feature exhibit is opened at the museum every year.
“Road Rivals” swaps out many of the vehicles seen in the outgoing “Muscle Cars and Motorcycles” exhibit, but it’s still catching plenty of interest, according to NECCM Board of Trustees President Randy Gibbon.
“This year’s ‘Road Rivals exhibit displays vintage police cars with muscle cars and motorcycles – even a police bike,” he noted. “We have a four passenger Emblem motorcycle that a family drove coast to coast in 1914. This exhibit has something for everyone.”
The Northeast Classic Car Museum has only grown in size since first opening its doors back in 1997. While many of the vehicles on display are owned by the museum, others are on loan by car enthusiasts from all over the country. Cars of the new “Road Rivals” exhibit includes police vehicles from California, New York, Massachusetts, and Maryland state police, as well as the New York City and Chicago police departments. What’s more, the exhibit spotlights a number of early century motorcycles and muscle cars from the 60s and 70s – the golden age of high-performance vehicles.
“These vehicles were spectacular creations, embodying the unmitigated optimism, power, and dreams of a culture that knew no boundaries,” said Jeffrey. “Nothing says ‘American’ like muscle cars and motorcycles.”
The exhibit bumps the museum’s total number of vehicles on display to more than 170 inside its 89,000 square-foot facility.
NECCM is a volunteer-driven not-for-profit corporation located at 24 Rexford St. in Norwich. It is open seven days per week with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-18, and free for children age six and under.
