Candor drops Lady Trojans in a shootout
CANDOR – The Greene varsity softball team battled all year to secure a 10-5 regular season record, earning them a playoff berth with a trip to take on sixth seeded Candor in the first round of Class C Sectional playoffs on May 19, ultimately losing 16-10.
The points were flying off the board right from the get-go for both teams.
Tied up at 9-9 following a high scoring first three innings – where Greene would score two in the first, six in the second, and one in the third; while Candor would score three runs in each of the first innings – it was Candor that would capitalize on some key plays late – and according to the Trojan fans some questionable umpire calls – to secure the six point victory.
“We ended just like we started, up and on our game,” said Greene head coach Rick Condon. “They left no question, and left it all on the field tonight.”
Heading into the fifth inning, Candor would secure an additional four runs, somethings Greene struggled with late to match.
Candor's head coach made a pitching change near the middle of the game which ultimately may have been the best call on the field, as the slower pitching style of the new pitcher seemed to throw off the Trojans at bat attempts.
“I told them bat speed, this girls pitching was just throwing them off. This girl wasn’t throwing hard at all, and their coach made a really good call switching his pitchers. Slower pitchers throw off better hitters,” said Condon.
Greene would manage to tack on, what proved to be their final run, in the sixth inning. While Candor would send another three home in the sixth.
Greene would attempt a late rally, only down six at this point, at 16-10. However, after two hits at the plate resulting in fly ball outs, it was Brittany Johns who hit a single shot to to center field, reaching first base safely, followed by Lydia Howard who knocked a double to center field, and Abbey Sands who was walked, to load the bases.
With bases loaded, Greene would see Jenna Harrington step to the plate. Harrington would reach first base on a fielders choice call, but Johns would ultimately be tagged out at home plate to finalize the score.
“It was like a proud parent moment, a couple calls go the other way and we would be playing Elmira Tuesday instead of candor,” said Condon. “They played from from the first inning all the way to the seventh, I know if the two lead off guys got on, we would still be playing.”
Pitching for Greene in the contest was Alex Thompson for the first three innings, before Lydia Howard came in for the remaining three. Thompson would only allow eight hits to go with her two strikeouts, while only walking three batters, while Howard would allow seven hits, only walking one batter.
Greene batters: Alyssa Sands 2-3 with two runs and an RBI, McKenna Sergi 2-5 with two runs, Sydney Bennett 2-5 with two runs and two RBI's, Maddie Brink 2-3 with one run and one RBI, Brittany Johns 3-4 with one run and one RBI, Lydia Howard 2-2 with an RBI, Abbey Sands 0-4 with a run, and Jenna Harrington 2-5 with one run and one RBI.
“I told them, they are the best group of kids I have ever coached, period. They really are, and it was a pleasure to coach them all and those seniors, I just wish I could've coached them longer,” said Condon.
Greene will graduate seven seniors from the team: Sydney Bennett, Lydia Howard, Alex Thompson, Kathleen Hanrahan, Jenna Harrington, Brittany Johns, and Abbey Sands.
With the 16-10 loss, The Greene varsity softball team concludes their 2016 season with an overall record of 10-6. Candor will move on to the second round of the post-season, and will play third seeded Elmira Notre Dame on May 24.
