Late push by Moravia slams door on Blackhawks post-season bid
MORAVIA – The Oxford varsity baseball team finished the regular season at 7-7 and earned a post-season appearance, traveling to Moravia on May 17, losing 3-1.
Oxford would lead over Moravia at 1-0 for nearly the entire game, until Moravia would finally get on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Oxford would see Jon Heggie score their lone run to help them take the early lead in the top of the third inning. Heggie would come home off of a passed ball.
“I kind of knew somewhere in the fourth that the sixth would be a real important inning. I figured they would have their top of the order up most likely, and their top of the order guys came through for them,” said Oxford head coach Chris Palmer.
However, despite Heggie's score the bats for Moravia were connecting with the ball at a slightly higher rate than for Oxford. Oxford would secure two hits in the game while Moravia would have six.
“Kevin was pitching very well, and we had a good defense going behind him for the most part as well,” said Palmer.
Davis was on the mound for Oxford for the entire seven innings, essentially keeping Moravia at bay for the majority of the game with his 58-strikes out of a total of 88-pitches. Davis would strikeout a respectable six batters, while only walking one.
For Moravia it was just a matter of biding their time enough for their bats to awaken to string something together, as Ridge Walker was on the mound for seven innings tossing out 19-strikeouts on the night.
“We played a good game defensively, we did a nice job. Both errors we had essentially allowed a guy to moved up a base, but when that happened we stranded those runners” said Palmer. “They just hit the ball a little bit more than we did, and strung together that sixth inning, that was pretty much the story.”
Oxford would commit the two non game threatening errors while Moravia would have one of their own.
Following the three run inning to take the lead in the sixth inning, Moravia successfully once again held off any Blackhawk scoring, allowing only Trent Lyons to reach first base on an overthrown ball.
Oxford would see only Kevin Davis record any hits on the night as he went 2-3, while Jon Heggie would end going 0-4 with a run scored.
“I have been coaching 12-years of baseball, we're definitely going to miss them, Kevin played four years of varsity, Corey and Nick were three year varsity players, Trent and Damon for two years. We're going to miss them, they’re good kids, it's gonna be tough without them,” said Palmer of his five graduating seniors.
Seniors: Kevin Davis, Corey Marshman, Nick Neer, Trent Lyons and Damon Maricle.
“But there is always someone else who is coming through that you’re trying to work with, and you hope these guys stay a part of the program. I kind of view this program as a family, so we wish them the best and hope that we stay in touch,” said Palmer of the future. “Hopefully we can keep them as a part of the program and they come cheer us on once in a while. We all hope they’ll go on to do great things in college or whatever they decide to do in their lives.”
In the loss, Oxford concludes their 2016 spring season at a 7-8 overall record. Moravia moved on to play Lansing on May 19, losing 10-0.
