Shutout win advances Crimson Knights to the semi-finals
AFTON – The Afton varsity baseball team is rolling over its competition in the Section IV Class D sectional tournament, as they recently hosted Downsville Central beating them 6-0.
The matchup in the second round of sectionals, saw the Afton bats light up the game when The Crimson Knights connected with the ball hitting a massive 12-hits in the game.
Afton would jump on the board early over Downsville when they posted a three run inning in the second inning, followed by a two run inning in the third.
This five run explosion early by Afton, coupled with solid pitching and defense proved to simply be too much for visiting Downsville who only could manage four hits in the contest, and scored no runs off those hits. Afton would tack on an insurance run in the sixth inning as well.
Afton split time on the mound, as Colin Nabinger pitched the first four innings impressively
throwing eleven strikeouts; followed by Brody Croft for three innings who added four more strikeouts for The Crimson Knights. Vincent Caiati caught for the whole game for both Afton pitchers.
Downsville saw their pitcher, Rampe, toss out only three strikeouts, as the Afton batters simply were not phased.
Afton batters: Joe DeVona 2-3, Tyler King 0-3 with a run, Conor Graven-Briggs 3-3 with a run, Vincent Caiati 2-3 with a run and two RBI's Mitchell Mertz 1-2 with a run, Kyle Hinman 1-1 with a run, Brody Croft 1-2 with a run and an RBI, KJ Ives 2-3 with two RBI's.
With the 6-0 win over Downsville Central, Afton (14-3, second seed) now advances to the semi-final round of the sectional playoffs. Afton will host third seeded Windham on May 24, at 4:30 p.m.
