Aldi coming to Norwich?

NORWICH – Putting to rest rumors that have been circulating for months, the Town of Norwich Planning Board has approved blueprints for an Aldi store at the north end of town.
According to Norwich Planning Board Chair Ted Guinn, the free-standing structure was approved by board members at their regular meeting earlier this month and were put on file at the Chenango County Planning Department.
“We approved for construction of a one story, 1,800 square foot grocery store with 1,100 square feet of sales area, 101 parking spaces, and on two and half acres of land off the south side of the North Plaza parking lot,” said Guinn, noting that the proposed build site is the former location of B&D Pool and Spa.
The board wasn’t informed exactly when construction would start, said Gwinn; but Town Supervisor David Law said it could happen as early as June.
“They didn’t confirm with us when they’re beginning construction,” said Guinn. “But basically, they’re going to need a building permit and they’ll be ready to go.”
Headquartered in Batavia, Illinois, Aldi now has more than 1,500 stores across 34 states, employs more than 22,000 people and has been steadily growing since opening its first U.S. store in Iowa in 1976, according to the company’s website.
Over the past decade, the franchise has nearly doubled in size and by 2018, Aldi will bring its total number of U.S. stores to nearly 2,000 – opening their doors to 650 new locations, including Southern California.
Aldi is in the midst of an accelerated expansion plan that the company says, by the end of 2018, will bring “fresh, high quality groceries at everyday low prices to more than 45 million customers each month.”
To reach its aggressive goals, Aldi promises to create more than 10,000 new jobs at its stores, warehouses, and division offices from coast to coast and invest more than $3 billion to pay for land, facilities, and equipment. When completed, Aldi will have nearly 2,000 stores, marking a nearly 50 percent increase in just five years.
Aldi stores already open that are close to Norwich include locations in the cities of Binghamton and Oneonta.
