Purple Tornado sends two representatives to NYS Tournament
ITHACA – This past Thursday and Saturday, on May 19, and 21, Norwich varsity golf sent three accomplished golfers to compete in the Section IV tournament for the possibility to qualify for the New York State Tournament.
Alex Gage, Brenon Maynard, and Ryan Johnson traveled with their head coach Dave Branham to the par 71, Cornell Golf Course.
The first day of the tournament, held on Thursday saw all 53 of section IV's top golfers compete for one of nine of the roster spots that would be heading to represent Section IV at the state level.
The first day saw Gage shoot a 90, followed by Maynard who shot a 88, and Johnson who shot an 81.
“The low 20 advanced to the next day, so all three of our guys advanced,” explained coach Branham.
The second go around on the course saw junior post another 81 on the day. Johnson would ultimately place fifth overall, qualifying him as a representative. This marks the second year Johnson will be heading to the state level.
Maynard, also a junior, found himself in a battle for the ninth and final spot on the Section IV State team, ultimately improving his play from Thursday to post a score of 80.
“Played in a steady drizzle and played the hole perfectly recording a par, he was in a contest with Ryan Whitacker from Union Spring,s he made a bogie so Maynard was the final qualifier,” explained Branham.
Alex Gage, a ninth grader, would ultimately not qualify in the top nine to advance any further on the season, shooting another 90 on the day. Gage would finish in a solid 20th in Section IV.
“Norwich has two representatives out of nine on the state team, which is really good. They’re both juniors, I think both of them are looking forward to possibly going to school to play golf, so this is big for them.” said Branham. “Individually I think they have a chance (of becoming an individual state champion), it is the best from every section so its going to be a great event. I think if they play well, and if they learn from every round they play and make fewer mistakes each round, then yeah they do have a chance. Both are very capable of shooting low 70's there.”
Branham went on to explain that the team state title goal is achievable as well, saying “If they all play well together and they can get eight good scores out of nine they could, but it'll be interesting we'll have to watch.”
The New York State Championship for high school varsity golf will be held once again at Cornell Golf Course in Ithaca, on Sunday June 5, and Monday June 6.
“I totally expect this again next year, Norwich is blessed with a great gold course which makes great players. Canasawacta is a great place to play so it builds a great player. We really are blessed to have that in our back yard. And I think our team will only get better next year,” said Branham.
