Oxford Tennis falls short of states

BINGHAMTON – The singles and doubles varsity tennis class C Section IV Championship was recently held at the Binghamton Tennis Center, on May 21.
Despite Oxford high school sending two representatives from their team – Francisco Quintana and Josh Nelson – to compete in the tournament, neither would earn a trip to the upcoming 2016 New York State Championship, which will be held at National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows on June 2-4.
Alex Wang of Corning, Mike Entry and Kolby Reasons would each secure a spot on the state team with Alex Wang emerging the singles champion, defeating Entry in a hotly contested three-setter in the finals at 6-3, 3-6, and 6-4. While Reasons would earn a third place finish when he handily beat Nick Parkes of Lansing at 6-1 and 6-1.
The duo from Oxford would not enter into the singles play of the tournament, instead they paired up to see what their play could earn them in the doubles side of the championship.
The doubles side ultimately would see Aidan Mackenzie and Michael Zhao of Ithaca, Steven Carman and Alexander Glickman of Ithaca, and Gavin DeWitt and Dustin McCullough claim a trip to the upcoming state championship.
Mackenzie and Zhao would earn the first place spot when they defeated Carmen and Glickman in the finals in a three setter, ultimately winning the crown at 6-2, 3-6, and 6-3.
DeWitt and McCullough would earn the third place spot when they easily defeated Griffin Goosman and Alec Greene of Maine-Endwell at 6-1and 6-3.
The Blackhawk duo of Francisco Quintana and Josh Nelson would see action three times throughout the tournament.
They would earn a what happened to be a bad draw when they faced the eventual champions in the very first round. Mackenzie and Zhao of Ithaca would waste no time earning the win over Quintana and Nelson, winning 6-1 and 6-0.
This loss dropped the duo into the back draw side of the bracket, where they successfully secured their first and only win of the tournament. Quintana and Nelson would show some grit when they took Max Feinberg and Haashim Shah of Vestal to three sets. The Oxford team would win the three-setter 6-2, 6-7, and 6-4 .
Now in a place to attempt to earn that third place spot and a trip to the New York State Tournament, Quintana and Nelson saw stiff competition once again.
The two Blackhawks would battle, but eventually would succumb to the eventual third place winners. DeWitt and McCullough of Horseheads defeated Quintana and Nelson in two sets at 6-1and 6-3.
Despite only the top three spots earning a trip to states, as well as those spots officially being the only recorded place winners. Quintana and Nelson would essentially earn fifth place finish in the varsity
