Race sets new school record, Tornado takes third overall
WAVERLY – The Norwich Purple Tornado boys varsity track team ventured down to the Pennsylvania border to utterly dominate in some areas, in the Section IV class B Championships.
The Class B Championships were held at Waverly high school last Thursday, May 26., and saw a total of seven teams compete in 18 different events throughout the course of the day.
The Norwich boys would claim a third place finish out of the total seven teams, when they claimed a 104-team points. Johnson City would claim the team crown with 124.5-points.
Despite many outstanding performances by all the athletes and many personal bests on the Norwich side, it was Zack Race who would stand above the rest. Race would break the 200 meter dash school record for Norwich with his new record time of 22.36 seconds FAT time.
Race would break, Norwich's Matt Murray's record of 22.50 time that Murray set in 2012.
Finishing behind race in the 200 meter dash, who also was the event winner, was freshman Eric Conant and eighth grader David Berger. Conant would Eric Conant would run a 24.23 for an eighth place finish, while Berger would run a 24.78 for a tenth place spot.
• Steeplechase saw Norwich's Ben Ericksen surprise some when he took to the event and posted a second place finish behind the eventual winner from Maine Endwell. Ericksen would run a second place time of 10:15.42 to the winning time of 10:05.39. Norwich's Chris Brown would also pull out a seventh place finish with his time of 11:34.09.
• 110 hurdles would see Connor Nial of Norwich sneak one point for Norwich when he finished sixth in the event with a time of Connor Nial 18.31. The winning time of 15.29 would go to Michael Palmer of Maine Endwell.
• 4x800 meter relay team from Waverly would earn the win in this race, winning the event with a time of 10:31.80. Norwich's team would secure a fifth place finish with their time of 9:38.92.
• 100 meter dash would see Norwich's Race claim the top spot once again, when he flew down the track for a time of 11.08, beating Windsor's Tyler Hozempa who ran a 11.23. Conant of Norwich would claim a point for Norwich when he earned a sixth place finish with a time of 11.72.
• The 400 meter hurdles saw Norwich's top male hurdler get edged out of the win, however post a solid time for a third place finish with a run of 1:01.03. Jonathon Bessette of Johnson City would claim the win with a time of 56.39.1:01.03.
• 400 meter dash would ultimately go to Jean-Woudson Jean-Fra of Johnson City with a winning time of 50.92. While, Norwich's Scott Tomanocy would sneak onto the podium with a sixth place finish with a time of 55.18.
• Grayson Hoteling of Maine Endwell would fly by his competition in the 1600 meter run when he claimed the win with a 4:27.04. Norwich's Ben Ericksen would just miss the top six when he finished in seventh with a solid time of 5:01.71.
• The 800 meter would go to Maine Endwell's Dan Schaffer with a winning time of 1:56.48. Gabe Gawronski of Norwich would not disappoint however, as he mustered enough to earn a fourth place spot with his time of 2:01.35. Noah Bufalini of Norwich would finish in seventh with a time of 2:07.35.
• Dan Schaffer of Maine Endwell would once again dominate another distance event when he won the 3200 meter run with a time of just 9:44.48. Norwich's Ben Ericksen and Stanton Baker would finish ninth and tenth respectively, with times of 11:23.31 and 12:20.90.
• Norwich's 4x100 meter relay team would suffer a loss, however still posted a solid outing in the event. Norwich's relay team would claim a fourth place with their time of 46.24. While the winning team from Johnson City would run a 44.75.
• The Norwich 4x400 meter relay team would see similar success as the 4x100 team had when they notched a third place finish under their belt, running a3:50.19. While the winning team from Johnson City ran a 3:36.09.
• The Pole vault would see a hometown winner of Waverly's Josh Mastrantuono, when he cleared the height of 13'06” for the win. Norwich's Berger would secure a 9' height for third place, while Noah Marvin would snatch a fifth place finish when he cleared a height of 8'6”.
• Jean-Woudson Jean-Fra of Johnson City would get another win when he successfully was the only athlete to jump over 20' in the long jump, officially landing at 20'8.25” for the win. Norwich's Conant and Vinal would miss the podium, but would finish seventh and ninth respectively when Conant jumped a 18'4”, and Vinal landed at 17'7.5”.
• The triple jump would see Norwich's Vinal have better success when he managed a third place finish with a jump of 39'0.75”. While Chris Brown of Norwich would secure some points for Norwich when he finished in fourth with a 37'0.25” jump of his own. The winner in the event was Tim Hawley of Susquehanna Valley who landed at 40'6.75”.
• The Norwich throwers – as always – impressed all on the day, when Thomas Reilly claimed the top spot in the shot put with his monster throw of 52'11” for the win. His teammate, David Bernstein, would lock up the second place finish for the Tornado when he managed a 46'4” throw of his own.
• The Discus, which is known to be Bernstein's strongest event, saw Brandon Holliday of Johnson City edge out Bernstein for with win, when Holliday threw a 151'8” discus. Bernstein would finish in second with his throw of 145'1”, while Reilly and Trevor McCarthy would finish in third and sixth respectively with throws of 138'8” and 120'11”.
• The high jump would eventually go to Mike Beebe of Windsor when he cleared the height of 6'6”, Norwich would see no one place in the event.
The boys varsity track and field team for Norwich will now travel to Vestal for The New York State Qualifier meet later on today, June 2, to attempt to qualify as many athletes for the New York State meet later on. The meet is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
