Lady Tornado take second with six individual wins
WAVERLY – The Norwich girls track and field team hiked their way down with the boys for the Section IV Class B Championships.
The meet was held at Waverly high school last Thursday, May 26., and saw a total of seven teams compete in 18 different events throughout the course of the day.
The Norwich girls would secure a total of six championships for this meet, en route to a stellar overall performance, taking second overall in the tournament with 108-team points. Waverly would secure the team title with 119-team points scored on the day.
• Steeplechase saw Norwich's Liz Eddy carve out a spot of her own when she ran a 9:59.01 for a fifth place finish. Molly Burdick of Johnson City would secure the win with a time of 8:09.70.
• 110 hurdles would go to Alexandra Lauber of Maine Endwell when she ran a solid 15.74 for the win, however, Norwich's Hannah Klocksowski would see some points come her way when she finished in fifth place with a 18.15.
• 4x800 meter relay team from Susquehanna Valley would dominate the race, winning the event with a time of 8:32.11. Norwich's team, much like the boys, would also secure a fifth place finish with their time of 12:25.09.
• 100 meter dash would see Norwich's Emily Shattuck run an astounding 13.03 for her class championship run. While Norwich's Marysa Campbell would finish in sixth with a time of 13.89.
• The 400 meter hurdles saw Susquehanna Valley's Jessica Hawley run a 1:14.25 for the win in the event. Norwich's Destiny Gladney secured her spot on the podium with a fourth place finish when she posted her time of 1:17.58.
• 400 meter dash was a solid competition throughout, as Emily Cluck of Johnson City would narrowly edge out Norwich's Hailey Colabelli. Cluck would run a 58.19, to Colabelli's 1:02.59.
• The 1500 meter run would see Norwich claim another championship spot, as Nicole Jeffrey would earn the win with a time of 5:16.37.
• The 800 meter would go to the home town of Waverly, when Elle Nittinger ran a 2:28.49. The tightly contested race saw Norwich's Nicole Jeffrey slip to fourth, however, was only mere seconds behind the winning time when she ran a 2:31.76.
• Cluck of Johnson City would earn her second championship on the day when she stepped into her blocks for the 200 meter dash, running a winning time of 25.47. Shattuck of Norwich would finish in third when she ran a 27.32 for the spot on the podium.
• The 3000 meter run would see Jeffrey of Norwich nearly reach another overall win, eventually falling to second place with her still impressive time of 12:15.38. The winner from Maine Endwell, Alison Otis would run a time of 11:49.91.
• Norwich's 4x100 meter relay team show a spark once again with their overall win in the event. The Norwich girls would run a 53.17 to edge out Owego Free Academy who managed a second with a time of 53.24.
• The Norwich 4x400 meter relay team wouldn’t enjoy the same successes as the 4x100 team, as they fell to fifth place with their time of 4:36.69. The eventual winners of the 4x400 relay came from Johnson City and ran a 4:20.41.
• Shattuck and Campbell would impress in the long jump for Norwich. Shattuck would claim another Class Championship win with her jump of 17'4.75”, while Campbell would earn a third place finish with her jump of 15'3.25”.
• The triple jump would see Norwich's senior triple jumper Vanessa Salerno fall victim to Owego's Julia Sarrge. Sarrge would finish in first with her bounding jump of 35'3.5”, while Salerno would take a second place finish with her jump of 32'4.75”.
• Just like Norwich boys throwers , the girls also impressed all on the day, when Katelyn Shaver claimed the top spot in the shot put with her throw of 35'6”. This was followed by Kara Evan's throw of 29'3” for a fifth place finish in the event.
• The Discus was slightly different story for the girls, as Jaden Finch of Maine Endwell earned the win with her monster throw of 116'5”. Shaver and Evans would finish in fifth and sixth respectively with throws of 98'7” and 97'8”.
• The high jump would eventually go to Alexa Kline of Waverly when she cleared the height of 4'6.1”. No Norwich girls would place.
• Pole vault would go to Ellie Olsen of Susquehanna Valley when she cleared 8'6”. No Norwich girls would place.
The girls varsity track and field team for Norwich will now travel to Vestal for The New York State Qualifier meet later on today, June 2, to attempt to qualify as many athletes for the New York State meet later on. The meet is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
