Shattuck earns her trip to states as lone female from Chenango County

VESTAL – All of the varsity girls track and field athletes from all classes in Section IV met in Vestal on Thursday, June 2, for a final their final chance to qualify for a chance to represent their section and respective school at the state level in the upcoming state tournament.
Chenango County was represented by student athletes from Norwich, Greene, Unadilla Valley, Bainbridge-Guilford, and Harpursville-Afton.

Norwich State Qualifier:

• All but one Chenango County female athlete completed their 2016 track and field season with the conclusion of the state qualifier meet.
It was Emily Shattuck, a sophomore from Norwich, who will be competing further into the season when she narrowly qualified for the state meet in the long jump.
Shattuck, who had been battling with some injuries early on in the season has returned to her natural form of excellence, as was showcased recently with this qualification. Shattuck would take to the long jump pits to earn a fourth overall finish in the event, jumping a solid 16'11.25”. Shattuck would only need to finish top two in her event out of class B schools, something she secured, coming in behind the eventual champion from Whitney Point, Emily Salvemini who jumped 17'04.5”.

Recap:

Long jump: Other than Shattuck earning her ticket to states in the event, The Tornado would also see senior Marysa Campbell compete with her 14'05” jump to land in sixteenth place overall. Freshman Abi Selfridge from Bainbridge-Guilford would also see some action in the event with her thirteenth place jump of 15'01.5”.
4x100 relay: Norwich would see their squad of Marysa Campbell, Emily Shattuck, Hailey Colabelli, and Delilah Geislinger run their fastest time of the season during the outing, running a 53.12 in the first heat of the semi-finals and qualifying for the finals. The finals saw the team best that time setting a new personal best of 52.69 and earning a sixth place finish.
Unadilla Valley would also put a team together for the event. The Storm would have Abby Avolio, Hannah Lazarus, Cearah DeCostaFaro, and Maggie Merlo run the relay in a respectable 54.81 in the second heat of the semi-finals. UV would not qualify for the finals.
100 meter hurdles: It was Norwich's Hannah Klockowski who would be the sole Chenango County athlete who would take to the track for this competition. Klockowski would run a time of 18.22 in the fourth heat of the semi-finals, failing to qualify for finals.
100 meter dash: NYS championship bound Shattuck was hoping for more than one qualifying event when she stepped in her starting blocs for the 100 meter dash. Shattuck would run a 13.24 in the second heat of the semi-finals, failing to reach finals only slightly.

1500 meter run: This became perhaps the most intriguing Chenango County showdown when all was said and done. Norwich Jeffrey and Greene's Katie Anderson would duel it out in the first heat of the event. Jeffrey would eventually secure the win in a race that was decided by a close one second margin. Jeffrey would earn the win in the first heat running a 5:06.26 (another new personal best) defeating Anderson who finished in second in the heat with a time of 5:07.79.
Overall, Jeffrey would finish eighth and Anderson would finish ninth.
Steeplechase: This event would only see one local athlete compete, oddly enough it just happened to be Harpursville-Afton's lone female athlete as well. Daphne Knapp, a senior from Harpursville-Afton, secured her seventeenth place finish with a time of 8:55.00.
Triple jump: Norwich would see their best 2016 female triple jumper complete her high school career with the conclusion of this meet. Vanessa Salerno would not earn a personal best in the event, instead managing to land a 32'04.25” jump, sticking her in fourteenth place.

Discus: Alexis Daniels, senior from Binghamton would dominate the event, when she launched a monster 160'4” throw for the win, a throw that would rival or beat most male athletes. Norwich would see their female throwing duo of Katelyn Shaver and Kara Evans attempt to stay as competitive as possible. Shaver would crack the top ten in the event, placing eighth with her best throw of 101'05”, while Evans would slip to twelfth with her best of 95'02”.
Shot put: Daniels of Binghamton would once again crush her competition, when she threw well over 10' further than second place. Daniels not only easily defeated her opponents when she threw her 50'7.5” throw, she also set a new New York State record with the throw, shattering the old record of 49'9.5” that was set in 2010 by Melissa Kurzdorfer of Lancaster.
Norwich's Shaver and Evans would once again try to stay competitive in the event. Shaver would see slightly better success when she managed another eight place finish in the event with her throw of 32'11.75”.
Evans would managed to stay in the top twenty when she placed seventeenth with her throw of 29'01.5”.
Pole vault: Castle of BG would take to the pole vault pit as the lone Chenango County female athlete to qualify to advance thus far. Castle would clear the height of 8'06” landing her in ninth place, tied with the girls from Corning, Vestal, Trumansburg, and Newark Valley.
There would be no local athletes would compete or place in the 3000 meter run, 4x800 meter relay, the 4x400 meter run, or the high jump.
