NORWICH – On the home opener for the Chenango Hellcats, they had hoped for a better outing, despite the hard work and preparation for this matchup against Union-Endicott, UE would earn the win at 8-3.
The game was slated to begin at around 5:30 p.m., on June 8, at the Norwich varsity high school field. Veteran and retired law enforcement officer Joe Coe threw out the first pitch of the season to commemorate the home opener.
"It was great to have a tremendous crowd at the game, considering this weather. Our community is amazing, thank you,” said head coach of The Chenango Hellcats Jason Miller following the game.
The Hellcats would hold onto hope for the early part of the game. After giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, The Hellcats would see Conor Graven-Briggs ground out to second base ultimately sending Vince Caiaiti home for the score.
This response was not finished however, as Johnathan Predmore would step to the plate at the very next at bat, hitting a single to left field,. This allowed Paden Burlison to make it home, drawing the game to a tie at 2-2, early on.
This early back and forth action would be silenced once and for all by UE, when they posted up a three run inning in the third, something the Hellcats could not fully answer the remainder of the game.
The Hellcats would attempt a run back for the lead in the fifth inning, after seeing UE hit home another two runs, however, this attempt would only warrant one additional run for The Hellcats.
Notably, the amount of errors committed by the Hellcats in this game compared to the previous game against Ithaca, were cut down significantly. The Hellcats would only commit four errors compared to UE's two.
“We played ok, much better than Friday night,” said head coach of The Chenango Hellcats Jason Miller.
However, the struggle for the home Hellcats this time around was connecting with the ball, and this was in part to facing an above average pitcher.
UE saw Anthony Vanfossen pitch the entire seven inning game, tossing out eleven strikes with only one walk, in his efforts to keep The Hellcats off base.
The Hellcats elected to give three pitchers some action in this game, with Joe Devona pitching for three innings, Joe Purdy pitching for two innings and Nate Scheer also pitching for two innings.
Devona would secure six strikeouts on the day, while Purdy and Scheer would tack on one additional strikeout each.
Hellcat batters: Joe Devona 1-4 with a run, Vince Caiati 0-2 with a run and an RBI, Paden Burlison 1-3 with a run, Conor Graven-Briggs 0-3 with an RBI, and Johnathan Predmore 1-3 with an RBI.
"Not bad for our second time out. Our pitching dominated. We just need to turn up our offense and tighten up a bit more one our defense,” said Miller.”We head out to the Naylor tournament in Bath, NY this weekend. So hopefully that 72 hours together will really gel us together and drive the next six weeks.”
The Hellcats (0-2) will be heading to Bath for the Naylor Tournament where they will face off against Oneonta on Friday, June 10; and Corning on Saturday, June 11.
