NORWICH – On Monday, June 6, fifth grade students from Perry Browne released approximately 100 Brook Trout, restocking the Canasawacta Creek.
“This is a science project that works in cooperation with ‘Trout in the Classroom,’ said fifth grade science and math teacher, Bruce Williams. “At the beginning of the project we learn about the importance of restocking the fish in the environment.”
Perry Browne Intermediate School participated in the ‘Trout in the Classroom’ program for Norwich City Schools for the third year.
Fifth grade teachers, Bruce Williams, and Caitlin Stamp, received 150 eggs in the fall from the program, and the class proceeded to feed and take care of the eggs until springtime.
“Throughout the year students feed the fish three times a day, change their water and test the water for proper pH, ammonia, and nitrate levels (this is to mirror the levels from our local streams),” said Williams.
Williams and Stamp noted that they are very supportive of this program, saying, “…it is an easy way for us to support the connection between what we learn at school, and the area in which we live.”
The students learn a combination of math, science, and geography from taking care of the eggs. Both teachers explained that It is a fun way for the students to learn about the importance of their environment and that it should be cared for.
“The feedback from the parents has been very positive and they seem to love the connection we are making to the local environment,” said Williams. “Some have stated they would have loved doing this as a student when they were in school.”
Williams also mentioned that some parents were curious about where they are restocking, possibly looking for fishing spots.
Alas, the program doesn’t just help children learning about the local streams and environment, but is also looks to help out local fishermen.
