Another record to fall?

NORWICH – The Norwich High School will see sophomore Zack Race head to states to represent The Purple Tornado in two events, the 100 meter and 200 meter dash.
Race has exploded out of the starting blocks for Norwich, as this 2016 Outdoor Track Field season truly marks his first year of competing in the sport, barring a season of modified in seventh grade.
“Well it was the first week, and I planned on joining the team but I was focused on academics,” said Race. “I ran a pretty good 40 time in football (4.6 second 40 yard dash), so then coach Horan said 'you know you should probably come out for the track team if you’re the fastest kid in the school,' So I came out for it and here I am. I really owe it to all the coaches, Coach Horan, Coach Decker, Coach Curley, all of them.”
Most impressively for Race is that he is regarded as the fastest Norwich athlete since Barry Benjamin in 1983 ran a 10.9 and Jason Morris, the current record holder ran a 10.8 in 1992.
“Records are made to be broken buddy, I am happy someone is there trying to break it,” said Barry Benjamin. “The kids are getting faster, I wish Zack luck.”
Jason Morris could not be reached prior to deadline for a comment regarding his record.
Race who hasn’t officially beat either Benjamin or Morris will be chasing those times at the state meet, as his fastest recorded time this 2016 season was marked at a 10.9. Earning Race the facility record, making him the fastest Norwich athlete to run at a home meet.
“There are a lot of hidden statistics I don’t really know about. I think they (the coaches) are just trying to give me a little bit at a time so maybe I can appreciate them a little more,” said Race.
However, despite all the hype over the coveted 100 meter dash, Race openly enjoys the 200 meter dash, and even has already set the NHS record in that event, at 22.36 beating out Matt Murray’s old record of 22.50.
“I like them both a lot, but I like the 200. You have a little bit more extra time to make up for your starts. Coach Curley knows I have probably one of the worst starts he’s seen ever. But I have been working on it,” said Race when asked which he preferred.
Race will enter into his races later on today as the eighth seed overall in the 100 meter dash, and the fifth seed overall in the 200 meter dash.
“The thing he will get most out of the state meet is the experience,” said Norwich head coach Shaun Horan. “The big goal for him is to make the finals for DII, and to try to bring home some hardware.”
The NYS Meet is slated to begin later on today, June 10, in Cicero-North Syracuse. The 100 meter dash is scheduled to begin at 1:50 p.m. and the 200 meter is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
“It hasnt really set it honestly yet,” said Race. “Honestly I'm just gonna go there and get better and better every time. I am gonna try to get a personal best, that would be nice. But of course the record is the goal.”
