Sherburne slaughterhouse project canceled
SHERBURNE – Plans of developing an industrial sized slaughterhouse in the Town of Sherburne are dead in the water – at least for the time being, according to Steve Craig, Commerce Chenango president and CEO.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that All In Meats, Inc., the newly formed Utica-based enterprise behind the Sherburne slaughterhouse proposal, had hit financial barriers which prevented it from moving forward with the project.
Craig told members of the county’s Planning and Economic Development Committee on Tuesday that All In Meats CEO Donald Meeker is no longer being considered for the project, but that there may be news about a similar project on the horizon.
“He (Meeker) spun a tale of what he wanted to do, but was kind of short on details,” said Craig. “He’s out of the picture, but we’re pursuing some other alternatives right now.”
Craig said the Development Chenango Corporation (the developmental arm of Commerce Chenango) is now in talks with a different animal slaughter LLC, but left details vague while the project is still in its early stages.
“The project hasn’t gone away,” he added.
In the spring of 2015, All In Meats pitched an idea to build a $20 million meat processing facility in Sherburne that Meeker said would generate 100-150 new jobs in the area.
Town planning officials was on board with the project, giving it the green light in May of 2015. All In Meats had been in the processs of identifying financing options, including possible state grant funding to make it happen.
