NORWICH – The Chenango County matchup between the Norwich and Greene Pony League teams took place June 15, at 6 p.m., with Norwich moving to 2-0 after a late seventh inning push gave them the lead for the win at 6-5.
“The first innings was the worst hitting I’ve seen so far from us, they just weren’t stretching out the counts. They just weren’t swinging at the good pitches. We were popping up and weren’t getting on base,” said Norwich Pony League head coach Nick McCullough.
Greene would jump on the board early in the first with a two run inning, followed by a three run inning coming their way in the fourth as well.
At that point in the game, Norwich could only muster one run to answer Greene's five.
This 5-1 lead would be given to Greene due to some superb itching to start the game from their first pitcher, Haskell, who pitched three innings and struck out three Norwich batters. Greene would elect to make a pitching change twice with Conklin coming in for two innings and Scott closing the final inning of the game out, securing two more strikeouts a piece.
In the third we had bases loaded and only got one run out of it, we swung at bad pitches,” said McCullough. “He(Greene head coach) made two pitching changes that I didn’t get, his starter and second guy that came in -Haskel and Conklin- both pitched very well. The third guy came in in the sixth and gave up the lead, he threw really hard and had good off speed but we took advantage of him not finding the strike zone. And when he did throw strikes, we actually hit. The last three innings we showed up and played like the team we are capable of being.”
Norwich, despite being down 5-1, heading into the fifth inning, would string together three consecutive innings of scores – one in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Pitching for Norwich was Eli Rodriguez for three and two thirds innings, before Troy Flanning would come in for one and a third and Mike Trevisani would come in to close the final two innings of play out.
“A lot of our wins last year were comeback wins. There is a reason why baseball doesn’t have a clock on it, you have to play until the final out is made, and my guys will play until that final out is made, and they did tonight,” said McCullough.
Norwich would rally on the defensive side to close out the game, blanking Greene in the final three innings.
“Troy Flanning came in, pitched out of a bases loaded jam. Then pitched a scoreless top of the fifth to keep Greene's bats at bay,” said McCullough. “Mike Trevisani came in and got the win, he went 2-4 with a stolen base and a run, but he came in and pitched shutout ball in the sixth and seventh. He pitched great, and that is why I think he is one of the best pitchers in this league.”
Norwich batters: Tyler Hagen 2-3 with two runs, Mike Trevisani 2-4 with one run, Marcus Cashman 2-4 with a run and two RBI's, JT Vinal 0-1 with a run, Brayden Supensky 0-1 with a run.
Greene batters: Shoemaker 0-3 with a run, Conklin 1-4 with a run, Scott 2-3 with a run, Hyzer 1-2 with a run and and RBI, Haskell 0-0 with a run, Thomas 1-3, Hoeppner 1-3.
“I told them the first day of practice, our biggest trait is our speed and were going to make teams throw us out. In order to win against us they’re going to have to play their best defensive game,” said McCullough. “I arguably think that we are one of the best teams and we will take advantage of stolen bases, we had eleven stolen bases tonight. We're very aggressive and were going to continue doing that.”
Next up for Norwich Pony League(2-0) is an away game against Sidney's team, on June 16, the game is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
