Hellcats split series in high scoring affair
WHITNEY POINT – The Chenango Hellcats Legion baseball team traveled to Whitney Point this past Saturday, June 18 to split the double-header action with Whitney Point.
The first game, a league game, which began at 1 p.m., would see the Hellcats dominate the contest, winning 17-5.
“We crushed them, we crushed them pretty good. We put the hammer down, we just had everything together,” said Legion head coach Jason Miller.
The Hellcats erupted onto the scene in the second inning when the posted a four run inning in their favor to get the ball rolling.
Miller credited an all around great team effort to the win, however, noted some incredible pitching on his teams part to a large part of the win.
“Pitching was pretty good in our first game. We gave Nate (Scheer) as much as I could then we switched it up,” said Miller.
Scheer would pitch first on the mound for The Hellcats for four innings, gaining six strikeouts in that time, before Joe Devona would come in to close the game out, gaining an additional strikeout.
After playing to a 8-5 lead over Whitney Point, heading into the sixth inning, it was The Hellcats who once again exploded on the offense. The Hellcats would put up four runs in the sixth, followed by five in the seventh, while shutting Whitney Point out for the 17-5 win.
Hellcat batters would record 16 hits to Whitney Points eight in the game, in a game in which both teams committed two errors a piece.
Hellcat batters: Joe Devona 4-5 with three runs and two RBI's, Paden Burlison 0-4 with a run, Vince Caiati 3-5 with a run and three RBI's, Jonathan Predmore 3-6 with two runs and two RBI's, Conor Graven-Briggs 2-5 with a run and an RBI, Nate Scheer 1-2 with three runs, Tommy Voce 1-3 with three runs and two RBI's, Cristobal Caballero 1-2 with two runs, and Kyle Crawford 1-4 with a run and two RBI's.

The Hellcats would turn right around and rematch Whitney Point at 4 p.m. that same day, this time with the outcome much different.
Whitney Point would be the dominate team, winning 16-2.
Much as the first game was dictated by stellar pitching from The Hellcats, Whitney Point would dominate the second, off the pitching from Jared Beiber. Beiber would toss out ten strikeouts, only allowing six hits and one walk in the contest. This was enough to successfully shut out The Hellcats for all but one inning.
“They put in the Beiber kid in the second game, and he was a good competitor. We didn’t even show up to face him in the second game,” said coach Miller.
The errors would jump back up to five for The Hellcats, something they have been trying to keep under control for much of the season. Whitney Point would only record one in this contest.
The Hellcats were able to record ten strikeouts of their own of the Whitney Point batters, however, the WP batters would also record 17 hits sprinkled in between the outs.
Tommy Voce would see action to begin for The Hellcats, as he stood on the mound for three innings, striking out six batters. Joe Purdy would come in for Voce, gaining four more, before Jonathan Predmore would close out the game, failing to gain another.
“Pitching in the second game, started Tommy and he did good in the first three innings. Six in three innings is pretty darn good,” said coach Miller.
The game would remain somewhat close until the later innings, as the score was just 3-2 in favor of Whitney Point heading into the fifth inning.
The final three innings, The Hellcats would fall apart, as they failed to record a run, and surrendered two runs in the fifth, followed by four in the sixth and seven in the seventh.
Hellcat batters: Paden Burlison 1-3, Jonathan Predmore 1-3 with a run, Conor Graven-Briggs 1-3 with a run, Joe Purdy 1-2 with an RBI, and Kyle Crawford 2-3.
