Burglary, subsequent fire destroys home in Smithville
SMITHVILLE - According to a release from the Chenango County Sheriff's Office, on June 23 at 10:18 a.m., the Chenango County 911 call center received a report of a burglary in progress at 268 Round Pond Road, in the Town of Smithville. The caller reported seeing a male enter the residence through a back door.
A Sheriff’s Deputy and members of the Greene Police Department arrived on the scene within minutes and discovered a male suspect within the residence. The officers attempted to have the suspect exit the residence, but were ignored. Dispatchers confirmed with the home owner, who was at work at the time in the village of Greene, that no one should be in the residence. It was also discovered that there were several firearms within the residence. Officers set up a perimeter and made further attempts to get the suspect to surrender.
At approximately 11:15 a.m., officers noticed smoke coming from the rear of the residence and called for fire department response. Within minutes, the suspect jumped through a window at the rear of the residence in an attempt to escape. After a short foot chase, he was apprehended by members of the CCSO. The suspect sustained lacerations to both arms while jumping through the window. Officers administered first aid until an ambulance arrived. The Greene Police and New York State Police also aided in the investigation
The suspect was identified as, Adam M. King, 25, of 240 Round Pond Rd., Smithville. King was transported to UHS Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City for treatment of his injuries.
The fire was extinguished by the Geneganslet Hose Company, the Greene Fire Department, and the Whitney Point Fire Department. The fire caused extensive damage to the residence, which appears to be a total loss.
King was charged with Burglary in the Second Degree, Arson in the Third Degree, and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree. He was arraigned in the Town of Smithville Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $100,000 cash bail.
