All-day tractor pulls, Fireworks celebration planned for Fourth of July

NORWICH — With the Fourth of July holiday right around the corner, preparations at the Chenango County Fairgrounds are underway to usher in patriotic pride to signal the start of summer.
For decades, Chenango families have flocked to the Fairgrounds to marvel at the magic of thunderous fireworks bouquets overhead — and thanks to Millennia Entertainment group, the long held tradition returns for 2016.
Despite an engineering protect that will continue through the end of July at the Fairgrounds, Millennia's Terry Potter has organized a day long Tractor Pull event at the grandstand leading up to the grand finale.
Tractor and truck pulls are a long standing tradition in this area with a large loyal fan base,” said Potter.
This action-packed family fun day gets underway with the gates opening Monday July 4, at 8:30 am at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. The day will include tractor and truck pull until dusk followed by a fireworks display.
Potter indicated that the day is sure to be a busy day, and with limited space this year spectators should plan on getting there early.
Food vendors Nina's and Tuller's will likewise be on hand throughout the day.
Throughout the regional tractor pulling circuit, Chenango County Fairgrounds track has long been heralded as has one of the nicest pulling tracks in the Northeast.
According to Potter, a local group of pulling enthusiasts the likes of Hank Tumilowicz, Don Clapp, Jody Newell and Paul Musk have stepped up to offer hours of energized action, and with a current roster of more than 40 trucks - some pumping out thousands of horsepower - there will pe plenty of adrenaline flowing throughout the day.
While most of the northeast pulling schedules typically begin near the end of July, the early Fourth event serves as a welcomed trial run for to the heavily-touted pulling season included in state and county fairs throughout the northeast and new england.
“A lot of the driver are eager to come and participate in the early pull,” said Potter “It gives them the opportunity to tune their machines in preparation for the season, so it works to their advantage.”
The dirt slinging begins early with a 9 a.m. start time and will include farm stock small sled and large sleds ranging in weight classes from 7,500 – 15,500 pounds. Truck pulls begin at 4 p.m. featuring stock diesel and enhanced gas classes, and super stock tractors will be featured at dusk, right before fireworks with awards to follow.
“We continue to offer family oriented events that keep costs in mind when putting together these community events,” said Potter. “We would like to thank all of our sponsors who assisted in making the event affordable for the whole family.”
Ticket prices are $15 per person at the gate, and children aged 15 and under receive free admission. The fee covers the daylong activities including the fireworks.
For those who would like to attend the fireworks display only; gates will open at 8:30 p.m. at a cost of $5 per carload.
This year's sponsors include NBT Bank, Matthews Ford, NYCM, Community Bank, Blueox Energy, Spence Law, All Leather Repair and Tuller Septic.
