Norwich Pony League remains undefeated clinches first in their division
UNADILLA VALLEY – The Norwich Pony League saw yet another game go their way, and another win added to their now 7-0 record, after they handily defeated Unadilla Valley's Pony League team 12-1, on July 5.
“We're 7-0, and we clinched first place in our division with this win,” said Norwich Pony League head coach Nick McCullough. “For the second straight year we have won our division, and this win is the third time we have beaten UV. We have outscored them 39-7 in those games.”
Pitching for Norwich was supposed to be Marcus Cashman, although due to an unforeseen illness, Mike Trevisani was once again called upon to step to the mound.
“Trevisani volunteered, he said, 'coach I got you'. I asked him if he was sure and he said his arm is good to go, so we went with Mike,” said McCullough.
Mike Trevisani came into the game with the spot start at pitcher for Norwich and recorded a phenomenal 10-strikeout game. However, Trevisani would surrender his first earned run of the season to UV in this contest. Due to having pitched throughout the season and being relied upon against UV, Trevisani will most likely not see action again pitching until the post season.
“It shows you how much of a competitor he really is. Usually I give my players a two/three days notice but he stepped right in,” said McCullough. “It wasn’t his greatest but it wasn’t bad, he pitched very, very well tonight.”
Norwich would find themselves up 7-0 over UV in fourth inning before Trevisani and his crew on defense would see UV earn their lone run on the night. Norwich would respond after the run by continuing to rack up the runs, with two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to effectively mercy rule UV at 12-1 in the sixth inning.
“We had two errors, luckily they didn’t come back to hurt us. The errors for us came too late for them, the damage had already been done,” said coach McCullough. “We haven’t made an error to cost us a game, we have been lucky. We scored three in the first off of just errors and bad play on their part. They seemed slow and we took advantage. A lot of our runs today came off of hustle and speed, we run everything out.”
The UV pitchers would combine for only three strikeouts, while allowing eight hits and seven RBI's.
“We had a very, very good offensive day, we put the ball in play and got on base. It was good to see,” said Coach McCullough.
Norwich batters: Tyler Hagen 2-3 with three runs, Eli Rodriguez 0-1 with two runs, Mike Trevisani 0-4 with two runs and an RBI, JT Vinal 1-4 with two RBI's, Josh Willis 2-5 with two RBI's, Brayden Supensky 0-3 with two runs, AJ Little 0-2, Cameron Birtch 0-0 with run, Jon Mattlack-Grey 1-3, Drew Walsh 1-1 with a run, Troy Flanning 0-1, and Bret Bates 1-1 with a run and two RBI's.
Notably, Eli Rodriguez was named player of the game for Norwich.
Next up for Norwich they will face off against Greene, a team they have beaten before but a team that coach McCullough attributes as their toughest competition. Norwich will play Greene July 6, at home at 6 p.m.
The Norwich Pony League team is asking that anyone interested help them out with funds for a weekend tournament in Hershey Park, PA. toward the end of the season. Due to Norwich locking up first place in the division, they have secured a home field advantage playoff game, Next Thursday, July 14. There will be a bottle and can drive to help raise funds for this tournament at their home playoff game on that date.
