Hellcats muster only three hits, fall victim to Cooperstown for the second time
COOPERSTOWN – In a late added non-league game, The Chenango Hellcats rearranged some of their schedule to rematch Cooperstown on July 13, only to give up the loss at 4-1.
Cooperstown – who previously beat the Hellcats 6-5 on July, 5 – would draw the early lead after sending a man home for the score in just the first inning, moving to a 1-0 lead.
The early lead did not discourage The Hellcats whatsoever, as they would respond to the small deficit when Cam Heggie stepped to the plate in the second inning, sending Conor Graven-Briggs home for the tying run, at 1-1.
The game would remain tied for until the fifth inning of play, as Cooperstown then moved to dominate the game from there on out. Cooperstown would send two runners in for scores in the fifth, before capping off the 4-1 win, with an additional run in the sixth inning.
The Hellcat pitchers – Cody Barnes, Joe Purdy, Conor Graven-Briggs, and Vince Caiati – would combine for nine strikeouts, six hits allowed, and only three walks allowed, during the low scoring affair.
The Cooperstown pitchers would see slightly less command over their pitches despite the overall win, securing seven strikeouts, only three hits allowed, but sending nine Hellcat batters to a base with a walk.
The Hellcats would fail to mobilize enough for a comeback late in the game, only securing three hits in the entire contest.
Following the loss, Hellcats head coach Jason Miller offered no comment on the outcome of the game.
