Vestal edges out Hellcats in league play

VESTAL – The Chenango Hellcats Legion squad squared off against Vestal on July 13, in an essentially must win league game in order to stay relevant in the post season race.

The Hellcats would suffer a heartbreaking loss, as they would record one more hit in the contest, but one less run, losing to Vestal 4-3.

The Hellcats would hold the late lead over Vestal at 2-1 in the fifth inning. With the win in their sights, The Hellcats would see the sixth and seventh go in favor of Vestal.

Vestal would secure the tying run in the sixth inning, moving the tightly contested 2-2 league game to the final inning of play.

It was Conor Graven-Briggs who would attempt to help his team edge Vestal when he knocked a solid ball to center field for a double. This double would send Joe Devona home for the 3-2 lead for The Hellcats in the top of the seventh.

Vestal had other plans than letting The Hellcats run away with their late game one run lead. Vestal strung together a solid bottom of the seventh, sending two runners home for the tight 4-3 win.

Pitching for The Hellcats was Tommy Voce for the first six innings. Voce tossed out 107 total pitches, with 67 strikes. Voce secured four strikeouts in the contest, with four hits allowed and three batters walked. Joe Purdy would pitch for part of one inning, throwing 19 times, with 12 strikes, but no strikeouts secured.
