Vestal edges out Hellcats in league play

VESTAL – The Chenango Hellcats Legion squad squared off against Vestal on July 13, in an essentially must win league game in order to stay relevant in the post season race.
The Hellcats would suffer a heartbreaking loss, as they would record one more hit in the contest, but one less run, losing to Vestal 4-3.
The Hellcats would hold the late lead over Vestal at 2-1 in the fifth inning. With the win in their sights, The Hellcats would see the sixth and seventh go in favor of Vestal.
Vestal would secure the tying run in the sixth inning, moving the tightly contested 2-2 league game to the final inning of play.
It was Conor Graven-Briggs who would attempt to help his team edge Vestal when he knocked a solid ball to center field for a double. This double would send Joe Devona home for the 3-2 lead for The Hellcats in the top of the seventh.
Vestal had other plans than letting The Hellcats run away with their late game one run lead. Vestal strung together a solid bottom of the seventh, sending two runners home for the tight 4-3 win.
Pitching for The Hellcats was Tommy Voce for the first six innings. Voce tossed out 107 total pitches, with 67 strikes. Voce secured four strikeouts in the contest, with four hits allowed and three batters walked. Joe Purdy would pitch for part of one inning, throwing 19 times, with 12 strikes, but no strikeouts secured.
Pitching for Vestal was Pazukaliz, and Valen. Pazukaliz pitched for the five innings tossing out seven strikeouts, allowing three hits, and five walks, while Valen pitched two innings, securing two strikeouts, and walking one.
Hellcat batters: Joe Devona 3-3 with a run and an RBI, Tommy Voce 0-2 with a run, Conor Graven-Briggs 1-4 with an RBI, and Kyle Crawford 1-3 with a run.
Vestal batters would see four separate batters secure only one hit each, with only three RBI's on the day. Errors on both sides – with two a piece – would separate the scores for ultimately a Vestal win at 4-3.
With a league game loss to Vestal, The Hellcats now rest at 7-6 in the league and 9-10 overall (after the loss on July 13, to Cooperstown, Hellcats head coach Jason Miller elected to change the non-league game to an exhibition game essentially removing it from the record).
Coach Miller offered no further comments after the loss to Vestal.
Next up for The Hellcats, they will play their final league game of the regular season against Chenango Forks, on July 14, at 5 p.m. at Chenango Forks high school.
