Ramsaran conviction overturned
NORWICH – Ganesh R. Ramsaran's murder conviction has been overturned following an appeal by the state Appellate Division.
In 2014, Ramsaran was sentenced to 25 to life in prison for the murder of his wife, Jennifer Ramsaran, in 2012.
Chenango County District Attorney Joseph McBride said the conviction was overturned by the Third Appellate Division which claimed that Ramsaran received "ineffective assistance of council."
"We are exploring our options," said McBride with regard to the next action his office will be taking. Those options include filing with the court of appeals to possibly reverse the decision.
McBride said that if the District Attorney's Office takes the matter to the Court of Appeals and the Appellate Court's decision stands, Ramsaran will receive a new trial.
"I respectfully disagree with some of the conclusions in the decision that I've read," said McBride.
According to McBride, the basis of the appeal is that Ramsaran claims that his lawyer was “not good enough” and that it deprived him of a fair trial.
