First ever 3v3 National Live soccer tourney to be held this weekend
OXFORD – The Chenango Chargers will be hosting Chenango County's first ever 3v3 Live Soccer Tour this weekend.
The one day tournament will take place at Emerson Field located at 4543 State Highway 12 in Oxford, and will feature roughly 25 teams.
“This is the first annual. They (3v3 Live) were looking to expand their base in New York State, they wanted more locations.” said Field Coordinator and U19 head coach Julien Drelich. “They contacted our club President. The message was forwarded to me to see if we wanted to do, and in June we decided to go ahead and do it. Basically we signed a two year agreement to hold this tournament this year and next. Hopefully we can get a soccer version of Gus Macker in this area.”
Much like the famous Norwich YMCA sponsored Gus Macker basketball tournament, this 3v3 tournament has already garnered some attention not just from local soccer athletes but from out of state athletes seeking a venue to compete as well. Drelich attests that due to 2016 being the inaugural year for the tournament, most of the teams this year are local, however, that there are a few teams who will be making the trip to Oxford from Ohio and New Jersey, among others.
Drelich has spent the previous years coaching the U19 boys Chenango Chargers Soccer team, while his assistant Dan O'Reilly has been alongside him for the past two years.
“We just need to get something going and get some publicity (in the sport). We have held college games on our field, we have an MLS trip coming up which we try to do every year, we're going to Yankee Stadium to see NYC FC play Dallas FC, it is all for the kids,” said Drelich.
Currently Emerson Field has five soccer fields set and ready to be used for this tournament on Sunday. However, Drelich indulged the idea that if the tournament was to grow in size, that Emerson field, consisting of some six acres of land could fully hold a large soccer tournament in the near future.
“Just like in Gus Macker, this tournament can qualify you to go to other regional tournaments,” said Drelich.
The 3v3 Live Tour website does in fact explain that the top four teams from any local 3v3 Live tournament qualify to compete at any Regional Championship in the United States. If your team wants to compete in the Elite Division at the Disney 3v3 Championships, they must participate in a Regional and finish in the top six teams in their age group. Teams that participate in any 3v3 Live local event qualify for the Open division at the Disney 3v3 Soccer Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando Florida on January 16-19, 2017. Teams must play and finish in the top 6 in your age group at a 3v3 Live Regional Championship to qualify for the Elite division at the Disney 3v3 Soccer World Championships.
The games will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, August 7, and continue until roughly 3:30 p.m. that day. Teams are allowed to register six individuals per team, with three playing (without a goal keeper) at any time. All teams are guaranteed at least four 20 minute games, with 10 minute halves, throughout the day-long tournament. The top three teams in each division will be receiving custom medals for each player. Top 4 teams in each division will qualify for the Regional Final of their choice.
