Norwich soccer fundraisers roll on
NORWICH - The Norwich Soccer Booster Clubs are asking for donations leading up to their second annual Kick Cancer Soccer-a-thon taking place on Saturday, August 20th from noon to 5 p.m.. The fundraiser is open to the public and proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society and the Norwich Soccer Booster Club.
Participants at the event can win prizes donated by local businesses, and the fundraiser’s progress will be displayed on a meter at the event. Last year’s Kick Cancer Soccer-a-thon raised $1,900.50 for the American Cancer Society and the Norwich Soccer Booster Club.
There will be a concession stand open for the duration of the fundraiser as well as hourly contests including a 3-on-3 tournament, juggling ball contest, world cup team challenge, and many more.
All Norwich soccer teams from modified to varsity will be in attendance and the athletes will be sponsored to keep a ball moving for the entirety of the event.
Leading up to the fundraiser, the varsity girls soccer team has taken a unique approach at raising money with something they call ‘flocking.’
“It’s a fundraising idea that other towns have used around us, it’s called ‘flocking’.” said Norwich varsity girls soccer coach Matt Wilson. “Basically these pink flamingos ‘show up’ in someone’s yard and in order to get them removed, they have to pay a small fee.”
Once the person has paid a fee of $25, they are able to nominate friends or family members’ lawns, and the Norwich girls will come remove the pink flamingos and transfer them over to the next yard. The earnings from the flocking fundraiser will go towards purchasing team warm-ups and a portion will also go to the American Cancer Society.
