New position created at county codes enforcement division
NORWICH – A new position within Chenango County’s code enforcement division was created Monday without nay from a single county lawmaker.
The part-time position will help the Chenango County Department of Health, the overseeing agency of the county codes enforcement division, play catch-up to the 900-plus permits that are open county-wide.
Department heads made their case to create a new position during a July meeting of the county’s Safety and Rules Committee. Pointing to more open permits than it can feasibly handle, the department solicited elected officials for the creation a new part-time codes inspector position to help alleviate some of the its compounding workload.
What’s more, the Health Department recently took over codes enforcement duties for the towns of Norwich and New Berlin, thus adding nearly 100 open permits to the mix. The Town of Norwich has the single largest base of fire inspections in the county.
The department currently has just two full-time codes inspectors on staff. With much of their time committed to site inspections and fielding phone calls from residents – many of whom need education and advice on do-it-yourself projects – department members had become “overwhelmed,” according to Environmental Health Services Director Isaiah Sutton.
At its height in the mid 90s, the Health Department had seven codes inspectors on staff. The department is responsible for administration and enforcement of New York State uniform fire prevention and building codes in the county, which it does through oversight of planning, construction and use of all buildings within the county.
If necessary, the Health Department may propose turning the newly created part-time position into a full-time position in the future.
