$1.1 million awarded to Chenango agribusinesses

CHENANGO COUNTY – Twelve agribusinesses in Chenango County are in line to receive piece of a $1.1 million state grant to help expand and improve their operations.
Grants to Chenango County are just part of a larger $18 million first-round allocation that was awarded throughout New York’s Southern Tier on Tuesday. Funding, administered through NY Agriculture and Markets’ Ag Industry Enhancement Program, will benefit a total of 214 projects in Allegany, Broome, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Chenango, Delaware, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins counties.
Advocates say that grants will help increase agricultural production, grow the economy, and create new opportunities.
“These grants encourage sustainable agricultural development, which is key to growing the Southern Tier economy,” NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo stated on Tuesday. “By empowering hundreds of farms to expand their businesses and increase environmental sustainability at the same time, this funding will help secure the future success of the region for years to come.”
Eligible applicants were awarded on a first come, first served basis. Up to $100,000 was awarded to each applicant for projects that help increase production and profitability.
Funding may also be used to offset costs of construction, renovation, irrigation, drainage, fencing, trellis systems, greenhouses, and environmental enhancements.
Before applying, awardees must have completed the NYS Agricultural Environmental Management program within the last three years. The program helps farmers meet business goals and teaches best environmental practices.
Projects that are committed to increasing their environmental stewardship were also awarded an additional $10,000.
The NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets is working in coordination with county Soil and Water Conservation Districts to administer the program. A second round of funding, approximately $4 million, will be awarded to projects in six counties including Broome, Cattaraugus, Chenango, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins. In Chenango, applications and eligibility requirements are available at the Soil and Water Conservation District located at 99 N. Broad St.
The Ag Industry Enhancement Program is part of the state’s “Southern Tier Soaring” initiative, the region’s comprehensive blueprint to generate economic growth and community development. The state has already invested more than $3.1 billion in the Southern Tier region since 2012.
In 2015, the state announced an investment of $500 million in the Southern Tier Soaring initiative. That investment will incentivize private business to invest well over $2.5 billion – and the region’s plan, as submitted, projects up to 10,200 new jobs.
