Blackhawks come up short in overtime loss

DELHI – One key block, one key catch, that is all that separated an Oxford varsity football win from a loss this past Saturday, Sept. 3.
Oxford would travel to Delhi to take on the Bulldogs for their season opener for the 2016 high school football season, losing 20-14 in overtime.
“I give all the credit to Delhi, they made their mistakes too but they were a very physical team and they just wanted it,” said Oxford head coach Jeff Newton. “Delhi is a physical team and they did what they needed to do to win that game.”
After heading into the halftime break down 6-0, Oxford would reemerge with a vengeance in the second half, driving down the field on the first drive in the second half for a score. The 75 yard drive was capped by a solid pass from quarterback, Chris Marin to Isaiah Peterson for the touchdown, which was followed by an Xavier Cruz two-point conversion run, drawing the score to 8-6.
A score and a two-point conversion for Delhi and a touchdown with no extra point or conversion had the game tied in waning moments of the fourth quarter.
“We tied it up in the fourth, a key block would have won us the game. A lineman missed a key block so the running back only got to the one yard line. We were driving right toward the end of the game and the quarterback through an interception (different drive), if he through it long it was a touchdown, but he threw it 10 yards short so that hurts,” said Newton. “We had a lot of mistakes. They are very credible mistakes, we're young, we just have to fix them.”
Undoubtedly, Delhi would earn the victory after a touchdown in overtime.
The silver lining in the loss for the Blackhawks was their star running back as well as some defensive standouts. Xavier Cruz rushed for 195 yards and a touchdown out of the Oxford backfield.
Newton attested to the prowess of Cruz saying, “If we didn’t have these mistakes, he probably could've gone for 250, no 300 yards.”
On the defensive end Newton explained although he is dealing with a struggling linebacking core who only produced minimal tackles in the contest, that his defensive tackle and two starting safeties were claiming those lost tackles for themselves.
Cruz would light up the defensive side of the ball at his Free Safety position gaining eight tackles and an interception, while Strong Safety Jon Heggie would rack up an impressive 12 tackles on the game. In the trenches of the defensive line, Defensive Tackle Jake Ingraham would see eight tackles of his own with four tackles for a loss.
“We had a lot of mistakes we have to clean up this week, and we're looking forward to playing Blackhawk football at home this Friday against Whitney Point.
Oxford (0-1) will play their home opener against Whitney Point on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m.
