Trojans route Bobcats in the first half, hold on for the win

BAINBRIDGE-GUILFORD – The boys varsity football teams of Greene and Bainbridge-Guilford saw their first live action game this past Friday, Sept. 2, when Greene traveled to BG for the eventual win.
28-0 is what the scoreboard read when both teams entered into their respective locker rooms at the half. And oddly enough, 28-0 is what the scoreboard read when the final seconds of the game ticked away.
Greene would see an offensive explosion in the first half, as they unleashed their talented running backs on the young Bobcat defense.
“Not only are they a good program, but they’re tough and strong,” said first year head coach of BG Israel Lorimer. “We did a lot of nice things, we did a lot we need to improve on. In the second half it felt like we caught up to the speed of varsity football.”
Greene would score four times in succession – two scores in the first quarter and two more in the second – with starting star running back Nate Erickson scoring the first off a three yard run with 8:02 left on the clock in the first, failed extra point. Coy Austin would then tack on a score, with a two point conversion attempt from Austin to Noah Kennedy for the 14-0 early lead.
The second quarter would provide similar statistics for Greene as Erickson and Austin both would reach the end zone once again each.
In total the ground attack from Greene would just wear and tear it's way around the field in those first two quarters combining for 40 rushes for 375 yards – 189 yards of which Erickson claimed for his own off of his 16 carries.
“Erickson is a great runner, he is impressive, he didn’t play a whole lot in the second half,” said Lorimer.
The 28-0 lead at the half was enough for Coach Dave Gorton of Greene to pull some key starters in the second half to ensure his team got reps in game action. This allowed a more balanced game between the two squads.
“I was pleased that we ran the ball so effectively and I was proud of our offensive line,” said coach Gorton. “Thomas A. Edison will be a strong test for us Friday night. They played well against Unatego.”
Greene will play Thomas A. Edison at home on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m., while Bainbridge-Guilford will travel to play Harpursville-Afton on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1:30 p.m.
“Harpursville/Afton is tough so we're in for another tough game, but I don’t think they’re as fast as Greene. I was impressed with Greene and their speed,” said coach Lorimer.
