Cops vs Coaches football game raises more than $1,000 for 2016 Shop with a Sheriff

OXFORD – To raise funds for the second annual Shop with a Sheriff event, the Chenango County Law Enforcement Association played a flag football game against coaches. More than $1,000 was raised.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputy Derrick Kruser, the Chenango County Law Enforcement Association President, said between 200 and 300 people attended the game.
“We are just starting to get going on planning for this year’s Shop with a Sheriff,” Kruser said. “Shop with a Sheriff is an event that we take a ton of pride in and means the world to us.”
Shop with a Sheriff is an event where children from throughout the county are paired with a member of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office to go holiday shopping. It is hosted by the Chenango County Law Enforcement Association.
In 2015, road patrol deputies took more than a dozen children Christmas shopping at the Norwich Walmart. The children selected for shopping at the event were selected by each school district from Chenango County.
Once paired with their deputies, they took to the aisles of the store, where each child was permitted to spend $100 on themselves and $50 on their family members for the holidays.
Further, Kruser said, “The game we played on Saturday, Sept. 10, was a fundraiser for the event. We raised $1185.00, 100 percent of which will be going back to kids who reside in Chenango County.”
Retired Deputy Sheri Howe was said to be an integral factor in organizing the football game and making the event possible.
“She was a huge help with not only this but also Shop with a Sheriff last year. Sheri has agree to volunteer her time this year as well for Shop with a Sheriff to help make sure the event is a success,” said Kruser.
Kruser added, “We didn't have enough of our own people so 6 corrections officers (from CCSO) helped us by playing in the game.”
Admitted Kruser, “During the game we learned that we were no longer 18 and got a little banged up in the process.”
Kruser said that the Cops team, “Lost terrible with Oxford scoring 28 points to our 10 (7 of which they allowed us to run in at the end of the game).”
“Everyone seemed to have a good time watching a group of guys well beyond their prime trying to relive their high school years,” said Kruser. “I can't express enough how much we appreciate the Oxford coaches for giving their time and helping us raise money for an event that is very important to us.”
Continued Kruser, “We would like to hold another fundraiser next year in something that we might stand a chance at ... maybe paintball.”
Further information regarding the 2016 Shop with a Sheriff event will be published as it is made available.
