VVS claims tournament title and MVP at 34th annual S-E field hockey tourney
SHERBURNE – Coming fresh off of a 0-6 loss to Clinton on Wednesday, Sept. 7, the Sherburne-Earlville Marauder's varsity field hockey team was looking for better results and improved play when they hosted their annual 34th annual home tournament.
The four team tournament would feature the Warriors of Morrisville-Eaton, the Red Devils of Vernon-Verona-Sherill, the Warriors of Sidney and the Marauders of S-E.
• VVS would emerge from the tournament as their 2016 champions after defeating Morrisville-Eaton 1-0, on Friday, Sept. 9, before earning the championship win over Sidney at 4-3, on Saturday, Sept. 10.
The first game for VVS on Friday would see an assist from McKenna Berry to Kirsten Oliver propel them to a 1-0 halftime lead, which they then would maintain as they advanced to the finals the following day.
The championship game would see a halftime score of 4-1 go in favor of VVS. However, the Warriors of Sidney would come out after halftime with a solid attempt for the comeback win. Sidney would outscore VVS in the second half 2-0, however, was denied the tie as VVS was able to hold them at bay long enough for the win.
• Sidney would see action against the home team Marauders on Friday, when they earned the win with a 5-0 game. The Marauders would see a 3-0 halftime score turn into a 5-0 final following scores from – Brianna Voltz (2), Olivia DeMott, Lilly Hinkley, and Taylor Hawkins.
Sidney would see 14 corners, with 13 shots on goal, and only three saves in the contest against SE, while the Marauders would see just two corners, while recording a total of three shots on goal in the game. In the goal for SE was Lexi Jordan with five saves and Jade Diamond with four herself.
Sidney and VVS would see almost an even matchup on defense and offense in the stat column as Sidney would record eight shots on goal and three saves to VVS's seven shots and five saves.
• S-E would see action on Saturday, Sept. 10 - following their loss to Sidney the previous day – against Morrisville-Eaton who would outscore the Marauders 3-1 for the third place win in the tournament.
After dropping to a 3-0 deficit in the first half, S-E would see improved play from all in the second half, as they successfully shut out the Warriors of M-E, while also tacking on a goal of their own to move the final score to 3-1.
Senior Alexa Bates would notch the lone goal for the Marauders in the tournament, as she scored in the second half of the consolation game when Kaley Judge sent a pass to Bates for the assist on the score.
However, this spot of offensive prowess was overcome ultimately by the Warriors of M-E, as they netted 12 shots on goal, 14 corners, while only having to see their goalkeeper - Alexis Jayson – record five saves in the game.
S-E would see the one goal from Bates, along with five other shots on goal in the game, while having only four corners and a combined nine saves from their goalkeeper – Lexie Jordan (6), and Jade Diamond (3).
Following the crowning of VVS as the 34th annual S-E field hockey tournament champions for 2016, the all-tournament team of all-star players was announced. For Morrisville-Eaton, Alyssa Smalley; Sherburne-Earlville, Lexie Jordan and Brooke Smith; Sidney, Mallory Stillman, Lilly Hinckley, Adrienne Paternoster, and Brianna Voltz; and for VVS, Gracie Winn, Kirsten Oliver, Kristen Holmes. VVS would also claim the tournament MVP spot as Elizabeth Kaido was named most valuable player on the weekend.
