Marauders field hockey scratches out first win in 2016
WEST WINFIELD – Following devastating losses in their home varsity field hockey tournament, the Marauders field hockey squad packed their bags and headed to Mt. Markham high school for what ultimately proved to be their first win of the year at 2-0.
“Hard work and hard knocks finally paid off. We have been improving on many levels each game and were rewarded with a solid win tonight. It was a great team effort,” said S-E head coach Sheila Cooman.
Mt. Markham and S-E would battle in the first half of what seemed to be an evenly matched game as the halftime score read 0-0. However, the offensive side of S-E would finally catch up to the hard work the defense had been putting in the first half, as a two score second half lifted the lady Marauders to the road win.
Nicole Turner would get the momentum shifted in S-E's favor when she was assisted by Piper Page for the first goal just six minutes into the second half of play.
Alexa Bates would tack on the insurance goal when Kahly Judge hit her with the assist with just 7:52 left to play.
Of the 14 shots on goal, just two landed for scores for S-E, while also seeing 15 corners, compared to Mt. Markham's seven shots and eight corners. However, due to the spectacular play from Lexie Jordan in the goal for S-E (seven saves) these two goals would prove enough to hand the lady Marauders their first win on the season.
Sherburne-Earlville (1-4) will play at home next when they host Morrisville-Eaton on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 4:30 p.m.
