Storm soccer splits with two Chenango County teams

CHENANGO COUNTY – The Unadilla Valley boys varsity soccer team now sits at a record after seeing two recent games go in semi-different fashions.
• Afton would ultimately get the better of the Storm team winning 3-1 when game was concluded.
However, a 1-1 tie at the half would put UV in a prime position for a possible win. It was in fact Jaymie Ticknor of Afton who would score in the first half when he headed the ball in from a pass from his teammate Mikey Graven-Briggs just three minutes into the game. Despite the early lead, UV would net a the tying score using a combination of passes leading to a Dylan Nichols goal off a Than Garry assist.
The second half was all Afton, as Ticknor and Graven-Briggs would seem to have figured out the UV defensive scheme and would again be in the mix, ascending Afton to the win at 3-1.
“First Graven Briggs dribbled around a storm defender for the finish. Then Ticknor knocked home his second on a ball bouncing around inside the 18 off a corner kick,” said UV head coach Ryan Houck.
Although the score read an Afton win, UV would hang close with the Crimson Knights only being outshot 10-7, while having more corners at 7-6. Adam Lamont would secure three saves in the contest for the storm, while Afton would see their keeper, Nate Austin record four on the day.
• On Thursday, Sept. 8, UV would travel to take on the Vikings of Otselic Valley in a game that would come down to the wire, extending into overtime for an eventual Storm win at 3-2.
Dylan Nichols would emerge the hero on the day with a goal in the first overtime period for the win.
“The winning goal came from Dylan Nichols who headed home an assist from Alex Taylor off an errant OV goal kick,” explained UV head coach Ryan Houck.
Prior to the stellar win in overtime, UV and OV would be tied at the half 1-1, this time for UV their game plan would ultimately prevail.
“OV came out and started strong, but gave up a goal to UV (Alex Taylor) on there first shot of the game, because of a miss communication between the defensive backs and the OV goalie,” said OV head coach Jacob Preston. “Later in the half Tanner Costa (OV) tied it up with some good foot skills to beat UV's back and pushed it pass the oncoming goalie.”
Alex Taylor of UV would again find himself in the mix following the first half, as he assisted Than Garry in the second half of play, to raise the Storm to the 2-1 lead.
The Vikings would rally with four minutes to go in the game as Titus Riechard passed a nice cross to Tanner Costa who scored the once again game tying goal for OV, score was now 2-2 and would remain so into the overtime period. The overtime period would end off a Dylan Nichols goal for UV.
“It was a hard fought game which saw OV goalkeeper, Carter Rood make not one, but two penalty kick saves,” said UV head coach of the OV goalkeeper.
Offense was abundant in the contest as the Storm would send 15 shots on goal for the OV goalkeeper, to which Carter Rood saved 11. While UV goalkeeper would see 10 shots on goal from the OV side, as Adam Lamont successfully saved eight.
Unadilla Valley (1-3) next saw action on Monday Sept. 12, against Greene where they lost 5-1 and will now prepare to rematch Otselic Valley on Thursday, Sept. 15, before hosting Walton on Friday, Sept. 16, at 5 p.m.
