Harpursville-Afton explodes for 57 points on visiting Bobcats
HARPURSVILLE – The Hornets of Harpursville-Afton have now advanced their record to 2-0 after demolishing the young Bobcat varsity football team last Saturday, Sept. 10, when they would defend their home turf winning 57-20.
The Hornets would see five different athletes score in the contest, as the team looked to dominate the ground game early and often – combining for an astounding 471 yards rushing, while only producing 31 yards through the air. The 502 yards of total offense by the Hornets would eclipse the Bobcats who earned just 203 total yards – 127 passing, 75 rushing. The turnover free game would see two Chenango County teams employ different philosophies in their approach to offense with the effective ground attack coming up on top.
Scoring in the first quarter for the Hornets was Mitchell Weist as he bowled his way into the end zone twice in the first quarter, both being six yard runs. A Tyler King two-point conversion run after the first touchdown would raise the early lead to 14-0 over the Bobcats.
The young Bobcats would show some fight, as they fired back at the Hornets with 2:19 left in the first quarter when Bailey Hotaling ripped off a 65 yard run for the end zone. The Hotaling rushing touchdown for the Bobcats was followed by a successful Zach Ouimet kick to make the game 14-7.
At this point, the Hornets would strike again in bunches, combining for another two touchdowns – Tyler King with a 24 yard touchdown run to finish out the first quarter, and Josh Wilson with a 43 yard touchdown run to open up the second quarter.
The Bobcats would find the end zone again, despite the heavy dosage of the ground game, when quarterback Austin Carr connected with Ouimet for a 34 yard strike through the air.
At 28-14, the Hornets would not settle for a mere two touchdown lead, as Wilson would star in the second quarter, racing to another touchdown this time for 54 yards on the ground, taking the lead to 36-14 following a pass from Tyler King to Mitch Mertz for the two point conversion to end the half.
Opening the third quarter, Wilson would not be corralled to just two touchdowns, as he once again found pay dirt for his third and final touchdown on the day, with just 7:28 left in the third quarter the Hornets would look to be in complete control leading 43-14.
Another Carr to Ouimet connection would remind the Hornet fans that the Bobcats were still there when Ouimet would find the end zone with 3:10 left in the quarter for 34 yard strike through the air.
Madison Hoover would officially take the air out of the game when he rumbled his way to the end zone for the Hornets, scoring a 57 yard rushing touchdown to close out the third quarter.
The fourth quarter would see little action, as the Bobcats were blanked to close out the game, while Slater Collins of the Hornets would hear his name called, finding the end zone for the final touchdown of the game, a 10 yard strike on the ground for the Hornets, followed by an extra point kick from King to raise the final score to 57-20.
Leading the charge for Harpursville-Afton was Josh Wilson with seven carries for 165 rushing yards and three touchdowns, followed by Madison Hoover with seven carries for 120 rushing yards and one touchdown. Mitch Weist would see the most carries for the Hornets with 12 coming his way for a 73 yard performance and two touchdowns. Followed by Tyler King would would tuck the ball for eight carries and 60 yards with one touchdown, and Slater Collins with four carries, 28 yards and one touchdown.
Bainbridge-Guilford would enjoy a heavier passing game in the contest as Austin Carr would complete 8 of 15 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns. While on the ground the Bobcats would see their most success come from Brady Hotaling who carried the ball 11 times for 69 yards and a touchdown
Next up for B-G (0-2) they will play host to Delhi-Charlotte Valley on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., while Harpursville-Afton (2-0) will be heading to Seton Catholic on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m.
Notably the Hornets, who are very run heavy, will be facing off against a pass heavy team in Seton Catholic, where once again different offensive philosophies will be put to the test.
