Trojan football home opener leads to blowout win
GREENE – The Greene varsity football team played their second game of the season at home this past Friday, Sept. 9, against Thomas A. Edison.
Edison would leave after four quarters of play the losers of 43-0 Trojan beat-down.
Greene would waste no time scoring in the contest, as they racked up two two touchdowns in the first quarter – Coy Austin three yard run, followed by an Isaac Hadac 89 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown (Zach Orzell two-point run) – raising the Greene lead to 14-0 following the first quarter.
The Trojans would combined for an impressive 240 yards on the ground off of just 34 carries, coming to seven yard rushing average.
The ground game for the Trojans would produce another score in the third quarter, when Logan Kennedy ripped off a 23 yard run to the end zone, which was followed once again by a Zach Orzell two-point conversion run, raising the score to 22-0.
Nate Erickson would earn some passing yards in the game, despite the heavy rushing attack, when he connected with Mitchell Walters for a 25 yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter. Orzell would once again score the two point conversion, this time through the air, as Erickson connected with him to raise the lead to 30-0 heading into the final quarter of play. Greene would only produced 63 total yards passing in the shutout win.
Orzell would finally reach pay dirt – not for an conversion – when the fourth quarter hit and he ripped off a 26 yard strike on the ground plunging Edison into a devastating 37-0 deficit following a Mitchell Walters extra-point kick.
Nate Berry would tack on the final score of the game when he was handed the ball, making the best of his limited rushing attempts as he took it to the house for an eight yard run, raising the final score to 43-0, following a missed extra point.
Leading the deadly rushing attack for the Trojans was Logan Kennedy who rushed for 89 yards on 12 carries, followed by Zach Orzell who ran for 86 yards on just nine carries, while Coy Austin would tack on an additional 30 yards on his four carries.
The methodical ground game proved the difference in the outcome, as Edison could only muster 44 yards on the ground and 79 yards through the air, while also turning the ball over twice off of lost fumbles.
Greene (2-0) will see their first division matchup of the season come this Friday, Sept. 16, when they travel to Oxford (1-1). The Oxford and Greene matchup will see two of the premier rushing attacks in Chenango County square off Friday at 6:30 p.m.
“I was very pleased with our second half on both sides of the ball. We were very focused and many different players made plays,” said Greene head coach Dave Gorton. “We have a lot of respect for Oxford, and we expect it will be a great division opener.”
